Deep in the Kalahari Desert, a Corpus lab protects a dangerous secret But what happens when that secret takes on a life of its own? When an educational safari goes wrong, five teens find themselves stranded in the Kalahari Desert without a guide. Its up to Sarah, the daughter of zoologists, to keep them alive and lead them to safety, calling on survival know-how from years of growing up in remote and exotic locales. Battling dehydration, starvation and the pangs of first love, she does her best to hold it together, even as their circumstances grow increasingly desperate. But soon a terrifying encounter makes Sarah question everything shes ever known about the natural world. A silver lion, as though made of mercury, makes a vicious, unprovoked attack on the group. After a narrow escape, they uncover the chilling truth behind the lions silver sheen: a highly contagious and deadly virus that threatens to ravage the entire areaand eliminate life as they know it. In this breathtaking new novel by the acclaimed author of Origin and Vitro, Sarah and the others must not only outrun the virus, but its creators, who will stop at nothing to wipe every trace of it.

Unique and fun story. I liked the plot although it had a slow start and seems geared towards a younger crowd (with certain dialogue and language-or lack thereof). The sci-fi parts were innovative and my favorite parts! 3/5 stars.

“The sky was a dying fire, embers turning to ash, as night settled quietly over the great Kalahari.”

Well, this was a fun, action-packed quick read! I read the other two books in this series around a year ago, and I was hesitant to pick this one up, but I ended up enjoying the plot and overall story.

4.5/5⭐. This had all the action Vitro didn't. I held my breath during this wild ride through the desert. The environment, as in Origin, was a living element. Apparently Khoury researched in Africa, which paid off. I liked the characters experiencing Corpus from the outside, not understanding, but fighting to survive. I also liked the main character's competence, drive, & difficulty connecting to other characters. Highly recommend. #projectsams

Waiting in the doctor's office, engrossed in this sci-fi thriller...don't want them to call my name just yet! 😆

WanderingBookaneer Hmmmm.... Have had this for a while. Maybe I'll bump it up my TBR. 7y
Bundoolin I like her other stuff! Vitro is really good 7y
Onceuponatime @WanderingBookaneer It's pretty good...aimed at a younger audience so some of the teen stuff gets a little 🙄 but it is fast-moving and interesting enough 7y

Onceuponatime @Bundoolin I saw Vitro on the back of the book as one of her other titles..was going to try it! 7y
Morbidgypsy Is this good for like 8 yr old or more of a teenager? If it's good I might read it. Add it to the never ending TBR pile lol 7y
Onceuponatime @Morbidgypsy Generally, it's more for middle-high school age. The main characters are 17-18 yrs. old, and there is a romantic storyline (no sex, just kissing 😘). But the adventure/ science aspect is fun...some 8 yr olds would be totally fine with this! It just depends on their maturity & reading level. 7y
Morbidgypsy Thanks 😃 7y

Started off slow and I was almost ready to quit, thinking that I couldn't read this YA book and then it took off. Really liked how it moved quickly and explained the animal life and the ways to stay alive in the Kalahari. Oh and there is some science fiction so it's a win win situation. It's another pick for our summer reading list!
