Where the Heart Is
Where the Heart Is | Jo Knowles

If home is where the heart is, what would happen if you lost it? Compassion and humor infuse the story of a family caught in financial crisis and a girl struggling to form her own identity. Its the first day of summer and Rachel's thirteenth birthday. She can't wait to head to the lake with her best friend, Micah. But as summer unfolds, every day seems to get more complicated. Her fun new job taking care of the neighbors farm animals quickly becomes a challenge, whether shes being pecked by chickens or having to dodge a charging pig at feeding time. At home, her parents are more worried about money than usual, and their arguments over bills intensify. Fortunately, Rachel can count on Micah to help her cope with all the stress. But Micah seems to want their relationship to go beyond friendship, and though Rachel almost wishes for that, too, she cant force herself to feel that way about him. In fact, she isnt sure she can feel that way about any boy or what that means. With all the heart of her award-winning novel See You At Harry's, Jo Knowles brings us the story of a girl who must discover where her heart is and what that means for her future.

Where the Heart Is | Jo Knowles

Where the Heart Is by Jo Knowles is a Whippoorwill Book Award winner that is a fiction novel and was published in 2019. This is about a 13 year old who is trying to find who they are and someone in their family recently lost their job so they are in a financial crisis. I think this would be a great book for upper elementary school students to read and some may be able to relate to this book. It seems to have a great message.

@TheBookHippie it is on its way! Sorry for the delay- I took longer than expected with my responses. @SaturnDoo created an incredible “event” and I wanted to fully participate in it. I also want to do more activities similar to hers! #lmpbc

Chrissyreadit @LibrarianRyan what happened to your middle grade for LMPBC this round? (I saw graphic novels but I‘m very hit or miss with them). 4y
LibrarianRyan @Chrissyreadit I didn‘t do it this time. There is a Mg graphic novel group. After a GN won the new berry this year I thought it would be nice just to look at Mg GN as they don‘t get a lot of love on Litsy. So I have 2 gN groups. A for any and B just for Mg. 4y

I liked this mg book that has a what I consider a nuanced approach to some tough subjects. In all honestly, I think it is very realistic that life changing struggles do not happen in a vacuum. It also was a beautiful example of friendship, acceptance and discovering who you are and who you like. #lmpbc #lgbtq I am so glad you chose this book @SaturnDoo

LibrarianRyan Mee. too. I enjoyed it. I will get the next one off to you soon. I am a bit behind. 4y

LibrarianRyan I agree. @Saturndoo 's book was a lot of fun (the journal). The book was good but i wouldn't call it fun. 4y

Whipped through this thoughtful middle fiction book. Rachel confronts a lot of obstacles, from family, friends and from within herself. It‘s a well developed characterisation, creating an authentic read. #preview #junerso2019 #lgbt plus cactus
