Almost all of the poems include a rhyming aspect that is very fun and easy to read. Children would love to be able to hear these poems read out loud!

Pickpick

Mother Goose written and illustrated by Tomie DePaola was published in 2009. It is a collection of traditional Mother Goose Rhymes that children love. The poems are cheerful and humorous and star the character Mother Goose and the familiar cast of characters. Parents can read these rhymes to young children or young readers can read them on their own.

“Gentlemen come every day/ To see what my black hen doth lay.“ This is an example of some old English in these poems.

I think that the illustrations in this anthology are very niche and resemble comfort. The poems all have a happy upbeat style and rhythm. Most of these poems have old English which can be confusing for younger children but can also be a great lesson in teaching how language has transformed.

I would definitely use this poetry book in my classroom. It is a great book to read to young children when introducing the topic of poetry. It rhymes and has good rythms and alliteration. Peter the pumpkin eater is something I used to read myself as a kid and it has stuck with me through all these years.
