From storytelling phenomenon and hit podcast The Mothand featuring contributions from Meg Wolitzer, Adam Gopnik, Krista Tippett, Andrew Solomon, Rosanne Cash, Ophira Eisenberg, Wang Ping, and morea new collection of unforgettable true stories about finding the strength to face the impossible, drawn from the very best ever told on its stages Carefully selected by the creative minds at storytelling phenomenon The Moth, and adapted to the page to preserve the raw energy of stories told live, onstage and without notes, Occasional Magic features voices familiar and new. Inside, storytellers from around the world share times when, in the face of seemingly impossible situations, they found moments of beauty, wonder, and clarity that shed light on their lives and helped them find a path forward. From a fifteen-year-old saving a life in Chicago to a mother of triplets trekking to the North Pole to a ninety-year-old Russian man recalling his standoff with the KGB, these storytellers attest to the variety and richness of the human experience, and the shared threads that connect us all. With honesty and humor, they stare down their fear, embrace uncertainty, and encourage us all to be more authentic, vulnerable, and alive.

If you've never listened to The Moth Radio Hour, you need to reevaluate your priorities in life. You also need to read this book, which is one of three collections of Moth stories

Megabooks 👍🏻👍🏻 4y
Suet624 There is no middle ground with the radio program. I either laugh hysterically or I sob. (edited) 4y

This was the New York that would kick your ass until the real you showed up, because it wanted the real you, and it would keep at you until it got it.

This was the New York that would give you humiliation in one hand and a tremendous gift in the other, and you had to take them both--you couldn't have one without the other.

I loved reading this! On Wednesday nights I like to listen to The Moth stories on NPR sometimes, but until recently I didn‘t know some of the stories had been compiled into books. I thoroughly enjoyed this format of stories that were told aloud first. They really drew me in more than collections of essays or short stories. Too many favorites to name!

I just loved this collection. I think All These Wonders is a teensy bit better, but there are some awesome stories in Occasional Magic. My favorite story was about an American soldier and an Iraqi translator. Now, I definitely want to see these stories live. It‘s on my #bucketlist now! 5⭐️

I‘m becoming obsessed with these Moth essays. I want to see it live now.

And how very NYC!

LiteraryinLawrence I love listening to the Moth on NPR. It‘s always on when I‘m leaving my chorus rehearsal to drive home. I didn‘t know they had made a book! 5y
Megabooks @LiteraryinLititz There are actually three story collections. The Moth Presents All These Wonders is on sale for $1.99 on Kindle now. I highly recommend it if you like the NPR show. 😁 5y

And then the social worker at vet school tells you she can‘t help with your compassion fatigue because she‘s there for the pet owners, then the heads of several rotations tell you that you can‘t leave campus for therapy without getting an automatic B, then you burn out on private practice after 4 years and spend time overthinking decisions you made years ago. 😭😭😭😭😭 Every time I get something wanting a donation from vet school, I tear that up!

Megabooks Sorry about this. I‘ve needed to say it for awhile. It was just so frustrating. #offonatangent 5y
rretzler Sounds very frustrating - it seems like vet school would try to prepare their students better. And job burnout is awful too. Sorry that you had to go through that. 5y
Megabooks @rretzler Thank you. 💙💙 I think it varies a lot school-to-school. It was disappointing that my school was a pioneer in vet social work, but they didn‘t seem to care about their students. 💔 5y

cobwebmoth That's sad. I'm sorry you had to deal with that. 5y
Megabooks @cobwebmoth Thank you 💕💕 5y
BookNAround And people wonder why vets have such a high rate of suicide. My sister‘s lost several classmates to suicide in the 20 or so years since she graduated. 5y
Megabooks @BookNAround I‘m so sorry. 💔 It‘s a huge problem in the profession. I‘ve been out for 7 years and lost two. 5y
Weaponxgirl I had no idea, I‘m sorry you had to deal with this ❤️ 5y
Megabooks @Weaponxgirl Thank you 💗💗 5y
kspenmoll I have never know someone going through Vet school. So sad. Cannot believe that school has help for animals etc but not students. Hugs. 🤗 5y
Megabooks @kspenmoll Yes, I knew I had to do some private practice before going into industry. It was just really hard. But I persevered! Thank you for the hugs. 🥰💜 5y
