* "A worthy successor to Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret set in present-day Oakland." -- Kirkus Reviews, starred review Celi Rivera's life swirls with questions. About her changing body. Her first attraction to a boy. And her best friend's exploration of what it means to be genderfluid. But most of all, her mother's insistence she have a moon ceremony when her first period arrives. It's an ancestral Mexica ritual that Mima and her community have reclaimed, but Celi promises she will NOT be participating. Can she find the power within herself to take a stand for who she wants to be? A dazzling story told with the sensitivity, humor, and brilliant verse of debut talent Aida Salazar.

Coming-of-age story that highlights the physical & emotional changes of puberty; and for girls, the shame and embarrassment that often accompanies it. Honest and hopeful novel in verse

Written in verse, with amazing multicultural characters! Celi is from a line of strong woman who await her coming of age and celebrate her first menstrual cycle with a Moon ceremony. For Celi, this causes a lot of embarrassment and anxiety at the same time she eases into her first relationship with a boy. Her best friend announces he‘s xochihuah and his family and close friends celebrate the male/female energies within his body.

TheBookKeepers This sounds awesome! Thanks for sharing! 4y
Cortg @TheBookKeepers This book is full of positive vibes for middle grade girls. I‘ll get a chance to meet the author for a work thing at the end of the month and I can‘t wait! 4y

If you liked the blunt discussions about periods in Are You There God, It‘s Me Margret and are in the market for a multiracial protagonist and her gender fluid BFF, this one is for you.

This book is written in verse. Celi is starting puberty. She‘s learning about those around her as she learns more about herself.

#themoonsong is perfect to bring awareness to the plight of girls and women around the world who are shamed over menstruation. Although necessary for school and work they cannot be purchased with food stamps in this country. In other parts of the world goes just don‘t go to school during menses because they do not have supplies. I will share links that can support women in comments. I love first moon events btw they are empowering! #maymoviemagic
