Little Dancer Aged Fourteen
Little Dancer Aged Fourteen | Camille Laurens
3 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
This absorbing, heartfelt work uncovers the story of the real dancer behind Degas's now-iconic sculpture, and the struggles of late nineteenth-century Parisian life. She is famous throughout the world, but how many know her name? You can admire her figure in Washington, Paris, London, New York, Dresden, or Copenhagen, but where is her grave? We know only her age, fourteen, and the work that she did--because it was already grueling work, at an age when children today are sent to school. In the 1880s, she danced as a "little rat" at the Paris Opera, and what is often a dream for young girls now wasn't a dream for her. She was fired after several years of intense labor; the director had had enough of her repeated absences. She had been working another job, even two, because the few pennies the Opera paid weren't enough to keep her and her family fed. She was a model, posing for painters or sculptors--among them Edgar Degas. Drawing on a wealth of historical material as well as her own love of ballet and personal experiences of loss, Camille Laurens presents a compelling, compassionate portrait of Marie van Goethem and the world she inhabited that shows the importance of those who have traditionally been overlooked in the study of art.

As a lover of Degas and ballet, it was a pleasure to read this book that investigates the identity of the girl who modeled for the Little Dancer statue. The author also provides a history of the ballet dancers in Paris and her personal interest in this subject. The author did a very nice job humanizing the model. 🩰 #MountTBR

Camille Laurens has written a book about the life of Marie Van Goethem, Degas's model and a dancer in Opéra de Paris. A fascinating hybrid text that combines biography, biofiction, art history and personal narrative. Who was Marie, immortalised when she was 14 in one of the world's most famous statues? If you want to know the answer, read Camille Laurens's book.

Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira Ça me semble bien intéressant ce sujet. Merci du partage, je l‘ajoute à la liste de mes envies ??? 4y

Translated from French. Truly interesting to learn more about the context of my favourite artists and the history of ballet! It‘s a world away from what it is now. #readingglasseschallenge

Weaponxgirl I have this on iBooks but somehow didn‘t realise it was in translation. It‘s going higher up the list now 5y
GivenLemons @Weaponxgirl The author‘s a French novelist and essayist! 5y
