Byatt, Catherine Cookson, Carol Ann Duffy, Germaine Greer, Alan Hollinghurst, Doris Lessing, Candia McWilliam, Edna O'Brien, Ruth Rendell, Tom Stoppard, Sue Townsend, and Jeanette Winterson. I'm a little less than a third into the tagged book & Struwwelpeter has been mentioned by 3 or 4 different authors so far. The Long-Legged Scissor Man seems to be one of the most well known tales. According to the informative, & interesting, NYPL article below Struwwelpeter is the highest selling German children's book, except for Grimms' Fairy Tales:
nypl.org/blog/2013/05/15/influence-struwwelpeter

LeahBergen And yet it‘s one I‘ve never read … and I see it mentioned so often in my “books about books” ! 2y
julesG One of my, and my kids' favourite children's books. Very cautionary tales with very gruesome outcomes at times, but due to the rhymes and the pictures it just sticks with you. The favourite story here is the one with the matchsticks. @LeahBergen - Read it. I'm sure you can find a copy at the library. 2y
charl08 Family friend sent this to me when I continued to suck my thumb as a pre-teen. I don't think it worked though! 2y
LeahBergen @julesG I will hunt down a copy! I want to find one with good old illustrations. 😄 2y

Finished this one yesterday just in time to return to the library on its due date. I have maxed out my loans in time for the school holidays that start at the end of this week. Spring holidays are my second favourite holidays, after the long Xmas ones of course. I just wish I didn‘t have to waste precious reading and swimming time on apartment repairs! I love books like these that you can just dip into and read your favourite author‘s thoughts.

I used to think a book-about-books was an ace in the hole for a book lover, but now I know better. The ones I love, I really, really love, but I‘m learning there are lots out there that just aren‘t for me. This is my 2nd book-about-books DNF in recent months — plus I read two others that were underwhelming. I‘ll keep trying others because I know the 5-Star (for me) ones are out there. Hat tip to this gorgeous cover though 😊📚 Moving on #readathon

📚📚📚 That first sentence put me on the defensive. The second sentence, I could soooo relate. Apparently my own home library is in the ballpark of “not a great many” which makes me 🤣🤣🤣 📚📚📚

(Quote from Jeanette Winterson‘s essay in this collection)

smilingshelves Oh, good, I'm right on track! Thanks to my recent library cataloging, I know I have 996 books. Just right, apparently. 😀 6y

My Book Outlet order finally got here! 🙌🏻 Even my husband was impressed with how much I got for $37. Acquired 3 more books for #litsyclassics and the top 2 mystery books are for my #secretsantagoespostal match! #bookmail is the best mail!

LeafingThroughLife Nice haul! Just finished Someone Else‘s Love Story, and it was great. 😀 6y
Bourriquet76 The brick and mortar Book Outlet store is 40 min from my parents' house. Guess where I'm going at Christmas? 6y

This is my kind of Black Friday sale! Also, the $35 for free shipping gets me every time, so I just got 13 books for $36. However, 2 are for my #secretsantagoespostal recipient, 3 are for the #litsyclassics challenge, and okay, the last 8 are just for fun! 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

If you haven‘t ever bought off of Book Outlet before, you can get $10 off your first purchase with this link: https://goo.gl/SVgjsx.

mrozzz DANG. You made out 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 6y

mrozzz I'm trying to stay out of Barnes & Noble and away from Book Outlet and Amazon lest I totally ruin any plan my #ssgp match might have in mind. It's so hard!!! 6y

I found some great quotes about reading and solidified some future reading choices. However, negatively, most of these were English writers, unknown to me, and they generally did not do a good job at answering what inspired their interest in reading.

Well, I guess you can say I am on a roll with vignettes about authors and books about books. I clearly know what I like...

Zelma I adore books about books. They're my Achilles heel and the only books I tend to re-read. 7y

"... my parents were worried that all the skeletons and gouged out eyes in Grimm's would warp my mind. Perhaps they did ..." I love Atwood's twisted imagination, glad she was exposed to the dark worlds of the Brothers Grimm at atoning age.

"Once you have taken possession of a book, you can inspect a writer's mind, in all its shades and dimensions." This is an issue we argue in our bookclub constantly. How can we question a character's actions or motivations if the character is a figment of the author's imagination?

I found this book mishelved at work today, and my book club is meeting tomorrow to discuss books we've loved and why we love reading. Isn't that serendipity? So I pulled more books on the theme to share.

LeahBergen I've been wanting to read Browsings 8y
Spiderfelt I hope to read the introduction to each of these books tonight, but that might not even be manageable considering I worked until 8pm. Reading books about books and talking about books and taking pictures of reading about books - all so meta. 8y
Spiderfelt Caveat: this is a reprint of a book originally published in 1992, with four new authors added for this edition. Perhaps it says something about my limited world, but I only recognized a handful of authors. Skipping ahead to the writers I've loved. 8y
