The Phoenix Illusion
The Phoenix Illusion: A SPI Files Novel | Lisa Shearin
3 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
The agents of the Supernatural Protection & Investigation (SPI) are used to dealing with the weird and the wacky, but even they are stunned when a building from another world suddenly appears on an empty lot in New York. . . I'm Makenna Fraser, seer for SPI, and it's just my luck that my birthday party is literally crashed by a building from another planet. And it's not just any building-it's my goblin boyfriend's house from his home world. SPI's mission, to keep the public clueless about the supernatural, has us scrambling to find who did this and why, not to mention how. The deeper we dig, the more we realize this incident is the opening gambit to a much larger event. Old enemies have combined forces with an even older nemesis to develop the means to kidnap an entire building and everyone in it. But who, or what, is their ultimate target? Finding out and getting to the mark before they do will require all hands on deck, including some extraterrestrial help from the goblin home world. We're running out of time, and if we can't get our act together, we'll have front-row seats for the end of the world as we know it.

Think Men in Black and that's kind of what you've got with the SPI Files series. I didn't feel book 6 was the strongest as there seemed to be more back story info dumping than previous iterations. Given that though Mak and her team spend their time chasing down buildings that keep disappearing and reappearing where they're not supposed to courtesy of some off-world enemies who've decided to form an evil cabal in an attempt to bring down the SPI.

Thanks @GlassAsDiamonds for the loan of this book! Now that the author has started to move beyond her horrible HORRIBLE decision to combine two series that should never have been combined, this series is moving along nicely. The main character has cemented her relationship with a multi-world millionaire and they must work with their team to stop some evil elves from vanishing people and buildings. 3/5 stars, a fun read even if a bit basic.

A solid offering in the SPI files, Lisa Shearin‘s amusing and slightly genre defying Paranormal/ Urban fantasy/ police procedural series. A fast and enjoyable read, the Phoenix Illusion is the 6th in the series. I do recommend it but the series does need to be read, and read in order, for the book to work. Still, they‘re fun, light and well grounded in global myth and magic so worth checking out if any of those genres are ones you enjoy.

iread2much Oooo! I loved this series, but after she tried to connect it to the Raine series, (such a sloppy bit of writing) I got super mad and haven‘t read any more. Does it get good again? 5y
GlassAsDiamonds @iread2much ah..... brutally.... no. It‘s firmly enmeshed in that world (cross over characters etc so there‘s no going back now) and there‘s a decent amount of reference to what I guess are plot points in one of the Raine books. It‘s not bad per se and I did enjoy it but it had virtually no myth and was nowhere near as good as the early books. Maybe #borrownotbuy ? 5y
iread2much Thanks so much for the info, I will wait for it to come to a library near me. 5y

GlassAsDiamonds @iread2much actually, if you‘ve got a kindle/ the kindle app, I could loan it to you - they‘ve set the DRM to one loan for 14 days so just let me know 😊😊😊 5y
iread2much @GlassAsDiamonds that would be amazing! Thank you! I am so a fuddy Duddy and have no idea how to do that, but if you would be so kind, I would love it. 5y
GlassAsDiamonds @iread2much 😊😊😊 Just drop me an email with the email your kindle is linked to ( glassasdiamonds@gmail.com) and let me know when you want the 14 days to start. Apparently it will appear in your kindle/ kindle app? If you‘re a moderately quick reader, you‘ll be finished in about 3-4hrs but if you want to dawdle, it‘s not going anywhere, I‘ll just send it when you‘ve got the time! (But apparently you do only have 14 days). 😊 5y
iread2much @GlassAsDiamonds thank you so much! I will email you and send the email we use for our kindles (we combined accounts) and then if you could send it to me tomorrow, that would be great!
