City Reading
City Reading: Written Words and Public Spaces in Antebellum New York | David M. Henkin
6 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Henkin explores the influential but little-noticed role reading played in New York City's public life between 1825 and 1865. The "ubiquitous urban texts"--from newspapers to paper money, from street signs to handbills--became both indispensable urban guides and apt symbols for a new kind of public life that emerged first in New York.

Picture 5. And this woman was only a few feet away from the man in Picture 4. See! Leave it to Littens to spot this stuff and be excited about it 😆🤓👍🏻👍🏻. #NYC

Birdsong28 When I see people reading I just wanna go up to them and ask what they are reading (if I can't see the cover) or what they think of it! 📚📖 7y
TrishB @Birdsong28 me too 👍 7y

I love #NYC! It's one of the only places where reading is a ubiquitously observable past-time ☺️😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! So, to illustrate, this is a series of pictures I took while sitting on a subway car bench for 2 stops and the platform upon exiting the train.

Leftcoastzen Is it really warm enough to wear shorts in NYC? (edited) 7y
RadicalReader @MrBook so if anyone wants to enjoy some quality time with books head to the Big Apple 🍎 7y
angrylilasian I was just in NYC! Can‘t imagine taking the subway without a book. 7y
