Do You Dream of Terra-Two?
Do You Dream of Terra-Two? | Temi Oh
22 posts | 18 read | 25 to read
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet meets The 100 in this unforgettable debut by a brilliant new voice. A century ago, scientists theorised that a habitable planet existed in a nearby solar system. Today, ten astronauts will leave a dying Earth to find it. Four are decorated veterans of the 20th centurys space-race. And six are teenagers, graduates of the exclusive Dalton Academy, whove been in training for this mission for most of their lives. It will take the team 23 years to reach Terra-Two. Twenty-three years spent in close quarters. Twenty-three years with no one to rely on but each other. Twenty-three years with no rescue possible, should something go wrong. And something always goes wrong.

Disappointed with this, the premise sounded so good. It was basically teenage drama in a spaceship.

This was an odd book. I liked it, but hated all the characters in it.. Ten astronauts leave Earth to go discover Terra-Two and on the way multiple problems pop up. I loved the premise and it kept my attention. BUT I hated all the characters. They were all horrible people with no redeeming qualities.

I‘m returning to Litsy after a 3yr absence. I‘m not sure what happened. I was overwhelmed by a toxic job & juggling family life. Now I‘ve jacked it in & moved halfway around the world! I struggled with reading at times in 2020, but am back and started the year with this awesome book by Temi Oh.

Space jargon that wasn‘t too much, believable teens & an excellent display of white privilege without ever mentioning the words. I loved this book.

If epic sci-fi is your jam, then this might not be totally up your alley, but if you want to broaden your sci-fi horizons, I recommend this. This does a lot of great character work and explorations into grief and humanity. Even if you‘re not a huge sci-fi fan, I still think you would like it since it‘s less about SPACE! and more about people. I did some #audiosewing and now I‘ve got two more masks: a new style for Remembrance Day (because I always stick myself on poppies worn the traditional way) and the same ol‘ pattern applied to an aged tank top.

This took me mighty close to the end of DO YOU DREAM OF TERRA-TWO?, which I‘m still enjoying. I‘m hoping to finish it tomorrow.

I did some #audiopuzzling the other day and ended up with a wee crystal car for my efforts. Today, I finally managed to take a decent picture of it.

Scribd let me access 8 audiobooks this month (whee!), and I chose the tagged book as my last one. I was a little hesitant on account of its low Litsy rating, but it‘s really working for me so far. It DOES feel like it might get overlong, though, so I hope Oh sustains this quality in the last 40%.

xicanti @Texreader thanks! I hope I can find more of these crystal puzzles for cheap. They‘re really fun. 3y

One cannot escape the pain of humanity no matter how far they travel from earth, a lesson one takes from Oh‘s piece. So don‘t look to Oh to transport you on an out of this world adventure for she can‘t seem to get outside the space of the characters head long enough to transport readers anywhere. Yet, the book is well written and it does challenge readers to ponder the human condition and how we as a species survive our own self destructive ways.

Still not entirely sure how to sort my thoughts on this one. So much I loved & yet so much that didn't quite land. Loved the sci-fi voyage to a new earth premise, the kids tasked with spending 20 years in space with their adult astronaut cohort, the science. But a lot of philosophy & character development that I wanted to--I dont know--add up to more, fit better. Parts felt slow & others too fast. I enjoyed it overall but left with mixed feelings.

I really enjoyed this one. Never really knew where it was going, but it was solid through the whole thing for me. My copy was missing two pages and I just have to hope nothing too important happened there.

For September I am focusing on women and diversity in space.
Starting the month with Do You Dream of Terra-Two by Demi Oh
Will finally finish Mary Robinette Kowal's The Calculating Stars, and I have a whole list of titles I cannot wait to head to #powellsbooks and the #library for.

ChaoticMissAdventures Bummer! This was a library copy, but I don't remember having that issue with it. What a strange printing error, and so frustrating! 4y

Lovely, though not what I was expecting. Thinking of a space program that actually focuses on sending humans into space, long-term, is always fun. Based on what happened in this, I certainly wouldn't turn away a sequel if the author were so inclined.

I may've just gone a little bit wild recommending books on overdrive (this isn't even all of them)... 😅

So this happened...
It‘s the first time anything like this has happened to me, and I‘m a teeny bit excited! The publishers (Simon and Schuster) emailed me to say they were using my quote in their publicity, and I‘ve completely lost my mind and told everyone. I have no shame!😂And it really was a really good read, honestly!😉

Bit of a dilemma: I've received a (no doubt mass) email from the publisher of this Netgalley book. The reviews on Amazon are sparse & they want more. I don't post reviews there bc some friends have had bad experiences, but I did like this book and would like it to get an audience. Should I post?

Jas16 I don‘t post reviews often on Amazon either but I would think that a positive review should be safe. 5y
CouronneDhiver If you aren‘t comfortable - for whatever reason - don‘t do it. Intuition is there for a reason 😊 (edited) 5y
charl08 @Jas16 @CouronneDhiver I had a look at the book page, and lots of other people have posted, so I think I can avoid feeling too guilty! 5y

This was an über-pick for me - I LOVED it!! Great character and world building, the whole story fascinated me. And from about 60% I think I read with my heart in my mouth. If I could‘ve read it with my eyes closed, I would have. Would you travel in a space ship for 20+ years to a planet that no one has ever been to, to start a colony? And start that journey before you were 20 years old? Such a good book (5/5 from me!!)

Great look at what it might be like to go into space on a generational mission.

And now for something completely different...
A future UK with an active space programme, heading for a perfect planet more than twenty years away. What could go wrong?!
