Crashed
Crashed: How a Decade of Financial Crises Changed the World | Adam Tooze
3 posts | 1 read | 9 to read
"An intelligent explanation of the mechanisms that produced the crisis and the response to it...One of the great strengths of Tooze's book is to demonstrate the deeply intertwined nature of the European and American financial systems."--The New York Times Book Review From a prizewinning economic historian, an eye-opening reinterpretation of the 2008 economic crisis (and its ten-year aftermath) as a global event that directly led to the shockwaves being felt around the world today. In September 2008 President George Bush could still describe the financial crisis as an incident local to Wall Street. In fact it was a dramatic caesura of global significance that spiraled around the world, from the financial markets of the UK and Europe to the factories and dockyards of Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America, forcing a rearrangement of global governance. In the United States and Europe, it caused a fundamental reconsideration of capitalist democracy, eventually leading to the war in the Ukraine, the chaos of Greece, Brexit, and Trump. It was the greatest crisis to have struck Western societies since the end of the Cold War, but was it inevitable? And is it over? Crashed is a dramatic new narrative resting on original themes: the haphazard nature of economic development and the erratic path of debt around the world; the unseen way individual countries and regions are linked together in deeply unequal relationships through financial interdependence, investment, politics, and force; the ways the financial crisis interacted with the spectacular rise of social media, the crisis of middle-class America, the rise of China, and global struggles over fossil fuels. Finally, Tooze asks, given this history, what now are the prospects for a liberal, stable, and coherent world order?

Got on the subway to head to the airport and upon opening my e-reader discovered it had crashed. Once at the airport, I discovered I can't use wifi to reinstall the software AND I forgot to bring its charging cord. $20 and 30 minutes later, it's still very slowly syncing content through the laptop. 🤞🙏

Graywacke Well that stinks 2y
Leftcoastzen Gggrrrr! We love them , we hate them. Sorry , it‘s exhausting! 2y
BarbaraBB That is frustrating! Did you buy a book instead? Safe travels! 2y

Liz_M @Graywacke @BarbaraBB It's an inconvenience. I mean I do have two physical books (but wanted the library scifi book) and I can get the library books on my phone, but I prefer the larger screen of the ereader. 2y
Liz_M @Leftcoastzen Exactly. And I'm stubborn and want to solve the problem NOW rather than waiting until I get to where I'm going. 😂 2y
vivastory That's frustrating! I hope you have a good trip, e reader difficulty aside 2y

My Litsy crashes whenever I try to scroll back on my timeline beyond a certain post. So I can't go back beyond, say 8 hours. It immediately shuts down each time. Is this happening to anyone else? I'm using Android. @Litsy @kgriffith

Kaye @batsy I‘ve noticed some “kinks” this week. I comment and it doesn‘t show up right away. I had the same thing yesterday where you try scrolling backward and it CLOGS. It won‘t go. Hopefully they‘ll get it back on track soon. 5y
batsy Thanks @kaye . If you had the issue with scrolling yesterday then that's probably what I'm experiencing. I've also had that issue with comments not showing up immediately for about a week. 5y
Kayla.Adriena Yes mine shuts down/crashes all the time 5y

erzascarletbookgasm I‘m not using Android, no problems with scrolling yesterday or today, but I noticed comments not appearing immediately and when they did, it was a double comment. It‘s okay now. 5y
rockpools I did wonder if there was a problem today - mine‘s been behaving, but it‘s been SO quiet on here this morning... 5y
erzascarletbookgasm Also noticed something funny. Litsy suggested I ‘follow‘ myself and a few other people whom I‘m already following! 5y
CoffeeAndABook Yep! Same here 🤷🏼‍♀️ and I‘m using IOS... 5y
batsy @Kayla.Adriena @CoffeeAndABook Thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one :) I'm missing my Litsy scrolling hour! 5y
batsy @RachelO When Litsy gets too quiet it tends to worry me too 😁 5y
batsy @erzascarletbookgasm My comments still take awhile to show up sometimes. I've stopped looking at the Suggested Users since it's mostly users I follow 😁 5y
TrishB Mines doing all those things too! It keeps logging me out too. 5y
Tanisha_A Yesss! 5y
Tanisha_A That not being able to scroll down past a certain is bothering me since morning. Ugh! 5y
Tanisha_A *certain post 5y
kgriffith I just scrolled for over a minute and got to 5 months ago so I‘m not seeing the same thing, but you can email litsy@LibraryThing.com with this info and we can look into it officially — we do have MLKJ day off so it likely won‘t be before Tuesday unless it‘s affecting all users, just FYI 🙂 5y
batsy @TrishB Oof, that's a bummer! I can't even recall my password 😬 5y
batsy @Tanisha_A I hope it's back to normal soon! 5y
batsy @kgriffith I don't know if it's all users, but it looks like some of us are experiencing this glitch. I've sent a report on Litsy but I'll send the email, too. Thanks! :) 5y
