How to Be an American Housewife
How to Be an American Housewife | Margaret Dilloway
10 posts | 21 read | 21 to read
A mother-daughter story about the strong pull of tradition, and the lure and cost of breaking free of it. When Shoko decided to marry an American GI and leave Japan, she had her parents' blessing, her brother's scorn, and a gift from her husband-a book on how to be a proper American housewife. As she crossed the ocean to America, Shoko also brought with her a secret she would need to keep her entire life... Half a century later, Shoko's plans to finally return to Japan and reconcile with her brother are derailed by illness. In her place, she sends her grown American daughter, Sue, a divorced single mother whose own life isn't what she hoped for. As Sue takes in Japan, with all its beauty and contradictions, she discovers another side to her mother and returns to America unexpectedly changed and irrevocably touched.

Shoko was a 3rd-grader an atomic bomb was dropped less than 50 miles from her home but grew up to marry an American soldier and migrate to America. I wonder how many migrants leave their histories behind when they cross borders, but yet never quite embrace their new culture. Hopefully, their children,if even grown, have the opportunity to learn who it is their parents really are.

Bailedbailed

DNF @ 30 pages.

The writing style‘s my biggest issue. It‘s VERY amateurish & poorly written. It doesn‘t flow at all & skips a bit w/out any transition or context. I also couldn‘t stand the narrator, specifically the mother. Her wholly passive aggressive & self-entitled attitude made me wanna throw this out the window. I was planning on reading more before deciding to give in, but I‘m not enjoying it at all. Don‘t wanna risk another slump.

Rachbb3 Good idea on bailing. I noticed 2 bad books in a row put me in a slump. Avoid at all costs! 6y
BiblioNyan @Rachbb3 Definitely. I had quite a few slumps last year & realised it was because I‘d force myself to finish stuff I wasn‘t enjoying. Not doing that this year! 6y

Starting this today! It‘s an #OwnVoices novel that is inspired by the author‘s mother‘s life, who was a Japanese woman that came to the States circa WWII era. That‘s all I really know about it. It‘s been on my TBR forever so I‘m happy to finally be reading it. 🙂

Pro tip... Don't be like me tonight and yell at your husband. 🤦‍♀️

In happier news.... one of my #bookmarkswap packages arrived! Love the little Boston and the handful of feathers! Thanks @mdm139 and I hope you're feeling better! I'm impressed you got this out so quickly with 2 young kids and pneumonia! ❤️

EchoLogical Love the feathers! Will also try to heed your advice but Dear Husband isn't helping much. Must be something in the water. 🤤 6y
bookcaterpillar_89 Haha I‘ve already yelled at my husband... multiple times. I don‘t see it stopping anytime soon 😝 poor guy! 6y
Kaye @jbhops Pro tip from somebody who‘s been married since dinosaurs roamed the Earth : A little yelling keeps them in line. Heck, my husband hasn‘t needed a good talking-to for years. Ever since he burnt a hole as big as his head , in the couch cushion with a hot pan of popcorn. He REALLY got yelled at that day. 😂. He‘s pretty docile now. 6y

I enjoyed this! It is about a Japanese woman who married an American after WWII. It's told half from her point of view when she is older and half from her daughter's POV.

Elisa That sounds interesting! 7y
PunksteR This sounds like my guilty pleasure type of book :) 7y

Bailedbailed

I am trying to read books outside of my usual fantasy/Sci-fi/YA genre...But I didn't finish this in time for book club so I'm bailing. I was learning a lot. It may have changed in style once told from the daughters POV. Mostly it made me feel sad though, and I don't need anything else making me sad!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sue is the daughter of a Japanese mother and American GI father. When her mother can't travel back to Japan she goes and learns so much about her mother and family. I really liked this book.
