Davita's Harp
Davita's Harp | Chaim Potok
6 posts | 9 read | 10 to read
For Davita Chandal, growing up in the New York of the 1930s and '40s is an experience of joy and sadness. Her loving parents, both fervent radicals, fill her with the fiercely bright hope of a new and better world. But as the deprivations of war and depression take a ruthless toll, Davita unexpectedly turns to the Jewish faith that her mother had long ago abandoned, finding there both a solace for her questioning inner pain and a test of her budding spirit of independence. "From the Paperback edition."

A book that lingers weeks after finishing it. Published in 1985 the story takes place in late 1930‘s & feels very connected somehow to today‘s world events. A mix of religion (Judaism vs. atheism) politics (anti-fascist fighting in Spain and the support of the Communist Party) & the day to day curiosity and grief of a teenage girl having to be a spectator to it all. The book delivers a history lesson & a realistic view of that period of time. 👇🏻

Suet624 Wikipedia mentions that the harp in the title was inspired by an actual door harp that Potok came upon in a Vermont country store. 4y
vivastory Hey, Sue. What is the best way for me to contact you? I need to discuss the September NYRB selection 4y
Suet624 @vivastory I was just thinking about that today. You bet me to it. suet624 at gmail 4y

ValerieAndBooks I‘ve read and liked some Potok, but not this one. Should look for it! 4y
Suet624 @ValerieAndBooks it‘s slow to start but I felt it ended up being a deeply involved and involving story. I‘m glad I read it. 4y
Nute I don‘t mind a slow moving book as long as I feel a connection to the characters or to the story. Stacking! 4y
Suet624 @Nute I hope you like it! 4y

I remember this line every time I think about avoiding the news. I want a break from the chaos but it‘s important to be a witness to what‘s happening.

BarbaraBB Wise words from a great writer ❤️ 4y
TrishB So true, I feel I‘m not doing my bit sometimes if I don‘t know what‘s going on. 4y

TrishB Yes, everyday. I despair of what people do and say to each other. Litsy is such a blessing. 4y
MsMelissa I have always been a news junkie. I have to know what‘s going on in the world. Lately, however, I‘ve had to take a break from certain parts of the news for my own well-being. I pretty much only pay attention to Canadian news now, whereas I used to follow global affairs quite closely. 4y
Suet624 @Book_Fiend_Melissa I completely understand. 4y

#7days7books Day 3

Seven books that left a deep impression on me and changed me.

Another special fiction book that got to me early on, and a Jewish author for Passover. Happy Passover to those who celebrate. (The book has Jewish themes, but nothing like Potok‘s more famous works.)

@batsy originally tagged me for this. Not sure who hasn‘t had a try, but @Suet624 - would love to see your list, if you‘re up for this.

batsy The description is very intriguing. Adding this to #mountTBR 👍🏽 4y
BarbaraBB I‘ve chosen a book by Chaim Potok too today! 4y
Suet624 Thank you for the tag. It might take me awhile to think through what to pick. The pressure! 4y

So incredibly sad, strange and lovely all at the same time. A tale of sacred discontent.

I loved this. The story was extremely interesting and moved at a good pace. I'm impressed with how he writes as a young girl.

Libby1 I'm a big fan of Chaim Potok's work. 7y
Alismcg it's slow moving at the start but no doubt worth sticking with it... 6y
