Surviving Your Stupid, Stupid Decision to Go to Grad School
Surviving Your Stupid, Stupid Decision to Go to Grad School | Adam Ruben
5 posts | 2 to read
This is a book for dedicated academics who consider spending years masochistically overworked and underappreciated as a laudable goal. They lead the lives of the impoverished, grade the exams of whiny undergrads, and spend lonely nights in the library or laboratory pursuing a transcendent truth that only six or seven people will ever care about. These suffering, unshaven sad sacks are grad students, and their salvation has arrived in this witty look at the low points of grad school. Inside, youll find: advice on maintaining a veneer of productivity in front of your advisor tips for sleeping upright during boring seminars a description of how to find which departmental events have the best unguarded free food how you can convincingly fudge data and feign progress This hilarious guide to surviving and thriving as the lowliest of life-formsthe grad studentwill elaborate on all of these issues and more. www.facebook.com/stupiddecisiontogogradschool From the Trade Paperback edition.

No fun reading tonight...unless you consider impact assessments or innovation comparison material interesting. Anyone? No?

This is a small section of my reading for graduate school...no light books here! Grad school was the absolute best time of my life! I met loads of people with whom I had so much in common, and we had SO. MUCH. FUN.

So this has become my life and I‘m only getting to read to and from the train station. Why did I do this to myself?

LittleBug I know the feeling!! Went back to school two years ago...been mostly bedtime reading since then...😢 6y
Schnoebs @LittleBug I got a decent amount of reading done last semester and some in the first but this semester is going to be a killer. I have a book club format kind of class where I‘ll be reading a nonfiction book once a week and reporting on it and I also have my research this semester along with all the other reading for my classes. Slowly dying inside. 6y
LittleBug We have to do a lot of reading too. Most of it is super interesting, but it‘s just not the same as reading what you want to read🧐 Last semester was so busy I didn‘t even manage to do most of my reading for school🙈 I‘m now in between semesters and alrhough I should be writing two papers, I‘m kinda making up for lost reading time😜 6y
MidnightBookGirl At least your travel mug is cute? 6y
Schnoebs @MidnightBookGirl I appreciate everything about you 😂 6y

@RavenLovelyReads well, they liked to think of themselves as assistants...this is really what they did. One would be on my computer. The other was in my arm chair. When I had food, they would jump on my desk and steal it (apparently they felt I needed to be on a diet). Not so helpful, really. One of them even attempted to consume my whisky for me one night. 🥃 That ended quickly at least. lol

RavenLovelyReads 😱 maybe he had a rough day?? That‘s a great story! 😂😂 6y
GingerAntics @RavenLovelyReads lol He could have. He stuck his face in the glass, all gung-ho about it, pulled his head right back out. He did not like the smell of it at all. It was some of the good stuff from Scotland, so you could smell this stuff across the room. After that, he would walk into the room, smell it and turn right around and leave the room. lol 6y
RavenLovelyReads 😂😂😂 mine licked some pop-rocks off my hand!! Never ate my food again after that! 😂😂 6y

RavenLovelyReads 😂😂....i can still see her shaking her head and looking at me as if she were asking “WHY??” 😂😂 6y
GingerAntics @RavenLovelyReads oh I never thought of that!!! ROTFL that had to have been a shock. I joked I needed to keep a glass of whisky next to my plate at all times. 😂 6y
GingerAntics @RavenLovelyReads I got that look after the whisky. He looked at me as if to ask what kind of poison I was drinking. lol 6y
RavenLovelyReads 😂😂😂😂😂 I cant stop giggling! 6y
GingerAntics @RavenLovelyReads neither can I...because I believe that was the same night I learned drinking games are intended to get you drunk. Totally didn‘t know that before then. lol 6y
RavenLovelyReads 😂😂 we went to a cigar bar- no one told me you don‘t inhale cigars 🤢...ah! The things we learn in grad school! 6y
GingerAntics @RavenLovelyReads 🤣🤣🤣 oh my god why don‘t people tell people these things?! 🤣🤣🤣 I had to go to a Shakespeare class still slightly tipsy the next morning. My teacher found it endlessly amusing. lol 🤣🤣🤣 I also learned to knit. 6y
RavenLovelyReads @GingerAntics Again- no fair! I wasn‘t taught how to knit! But my parents accused me of goofing off and taking underwater basket weaving! 😜....can‘t make a basket to save my life 😇 (edited) 6y
GingerAntics @RavenLovelyReads ROTFL mine never did that, luckily. I did get accused by some guys of going for an MRS though. I still want to punch people in the face for that. No one actually does that. This isn‘t the 60s. 6y
GingerAntics @RavenLovelyReads I had a classmate who would knit during class, so we started asking for lessons. lol 6y
RavenLovelyReads 😂😂😂 wow! I have no comeback for that! I hope you gave him a high five ✋ to his face 😜 6y

These two handsome boys got me through grad school. They thought they were the greatest research assistants ever. At least they had their good looks. @RavenLovelyReads This is Squishy and Noodle...otherwise known as big brother and little brother. If you have IG go look up #BrothersGinger and you‘ll find a bunch of pictures of them. In fact, most of the photos under that hashtag are them. lol #gradschool #gradstudent #gradstudentlife #cats

RavenLovelyReads No fair! You had assistants??? All I had was a grey cheerleader...with whiskers! 😜 6y
RavenLovelyReads ...total cuties, though! I‘m sure they provided security too.🤓 6y
GingerAntics @RavenLovelyReads that was a totally hectic time in life in general. I became a caretaker for my mother after she had a stroke. We ended up homeless twice. I was lucky I survived I think. 6y

RavenLovelyReads @GingerAntics Crikey! Yes- I have nothing but absolute respect for you! I saw people dropping out left and right for far less than what you went through. I “meet” people on Litsy that I wish i could talk nerdy with at a bookstore - you are definitely one of them. Thanks for sharing your story. (edited) 6y
GingerAntics @RavenLovelyReads lol I was lucky not to know anyone who dropped out. We weren‘t a particularly small program, but everyone I started with I finished with. I‘m pretty sure that is not the norm, though. I‘ve heard of people dropping out for all sorts of reasons. It never seriously crossed my mind to stop going. I joked about it once, but decided it wasn‘t happening. My hard headed gingerness must have saved the day. lol 6y
RavenLovelyReads @GingerAntics no- not the norm. I feel like i found a 🦄 ! A class where no one dropped 👊🏻 6y
