The Piano Tuner
The Piano Tuner: A Novel | Daniel Mason
6 posts | 15 read | 7 to read
In 1886 a shy, middle-aged piano tuner named Edgar Drake receives an unusual commission from the British War Office: to travel to the remote jungles of northeast Burma and there repair a rare piano belonging to an eccentric army surgeon who has proven mysteriously indispensable to the imperial design. From this irresistible beginning, The Piano Tuner launches its protagonist into a world of seductive loveliness and nightmarish intrigue. And as he follows Drakes journey, Mason dazzles readers with his erudition, moves them with his vibrantly rendered characters, and enmeshes them in the unbreakable spell of his storytelling. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Interesting book. Still, thinking about it as it included a lot of technical details about pianos, malaria and history.

Blaire I felt similarly. Also, I will get your book back to you in the mail shortly. It‘s been in my car for weeks just haven‘t made it to the post office. Will do this week. 5y
mariaku21 @Blaire Sorry I've been absent but I did get the book back. With the holidays all coming in the way they do, everyone gets busy but thank you! 5y

I think this book would have worked beautifully as a novella. A piano tuner is sent to British occupied Myanmar to fix a military doctor‘s piano - addresses colonialism, motivations, and relationships. The parts secondary to the main story were overly wordy and didn‘t tie in well for me, but the primary plot was intense and drew me in. Beautiful parts and parts I skimmed a lot which earns it a so-so.

Lel2403 A nice, honest review ... 6y
