I am not sure how you could find a book packed with plot twists and violence a slog to get through at times but I did. I think there was so much going on all of the time that I was never given the space to care about any of it. The characters never felt fleshed out which was a shame. I kept waiting to become enamored with Alma and it just never happened because she never felt real to me.

How does this teacher celebrate the end of two days of scoring placement tests? She goes to her favorite indie bookstore and drops major $ on books and a candle that smells like the forest.

Christine Well done! 👏 4y

This book is bonkers in the absolute best way! A badass woman leads you through this thrilling, sexy adventure. She takes no gender except as a character, and holds her own as she travels in each skin. Her sexuality cannot be pinpointed, and her sexual cravings are varied. Very, very violent - fitting for this person who lives for the fight and the plan and the sex. Loved it like crazy!

Fairly early on in this but really digging it so far. Very possible the world of books needs more dodgy-former-Pinkerton-turned-criminal female protagonists in it.

What an ending!!!! This 1880s historical crime / thriller novel is about a cross dressing former government spy who now works for an opium smuggling ring. Her boss (a fellow queer woman of colour) has sent her to investigate missing opium. This plot was a bit too smart for me -- I had trouble keeping track. I also prefer my characters less morally ... corrupt? But I found the book fascinating and very sexy (very hot f/f and m/f sex scenes).

Snow days are for working home and audiobooks!! Except I always have a hard time getting into an audiobook. My brain wanders and I lose half the plot. Anyone else have this problem? #audiobook #snowdays

A Western-ish/historical fiction crime drama featuring a complex female MC.
Alma Rosales goes undercover as a man to discover who is stealing product from the opium ring her former lover fronts. While infiltrating the local organization she's also sending coded messages to Pinkerton's agents with details on the smuggling operation.
Full of twists that kept me guessing at every turn!
Thanks to FSG and NetGalley for an ARC.

The Best Bad Things delivers all that the title promises. Alma Rosales, a Pinkerton agent operating in 1887 in the western frontier is on the hunt for opium thieves. Some missing cargo in Washington leaves Alma following clues across the west sometimes in her own guise, sometimes dressed as Jack Camp, a hard-talking, punch-throwing cowboy. A superbly plotted mystery set in the Wild West. #netgalley
