This book took a good beating while I was reading it. And yes I cracked the spine and underlined the crap out of it with a pencil. I didn‘t annotate this one. If you read this get ready for a challenge. Here is a link to my gr review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/3903724768?book_show_action=false&from_rev...

The devotions of a 15th century monk. It was good but I had to read it in bite size pieces. It‘s a book I‘ve put down and picked up again a couple of times and finally finished this morning. 😊

This is not a book that you want to warp speed through. And you will want to have a version of the Latin Vulgate on hand while reading it. I using the Douay Rheims version with it and so far so good. If you aren‘t good with Roman Numerals keep a cheat sheet on hand. Scripture references are in Roman Numerals.

Rachbb3 I‘m currently reading this as well. 😊 3y
quirkyreader @Rachbb3 How is the reading going for you? I‘m also reading “Seeking The Face of God” by Gary Thomas, which is heavily referencing St. Thomas A Kempis‘s book. 3y
Rachbb3 I‘m reading it a couple chapters a day like a devotional. I have a few days left. It‘s not a book I can read much at a time. 3y

The edition on the left is the one that I‘m reading. The one on the right was a gift and it was printed in the 19th Century and is still in good condition.

Come-read-with-me This is so cool! 3y
Lcsmcat My youngest was born on St. Thomas a Kempis‘ Saint day. Had she been a boy, she might have been named Thomas. 3y
quirkyreader @Lcsmcat did you name her Thomisina? The girls variant of the name. 3y
Lcsmcat @quirkyreader No, we didn‘t. But this book was given to her by her godfather and is probably the first book she was given, since she‘s the third and there were already lots of kids books in the house. 3y

1️⃣ Usually I quote Thomas a Kempis: In omnibus requiem quaesivi et nusquam in veni nisi in angulo cum libro.
2️⃣ Try again. Fail again. Fail better. Samuel Beckett.

An 1839 German edition of Imitation of Christ that, from what I can tell, was given to my second great grandfather Hindermann in 1873, when he was around 16.

LeahBergen Cool! 5y
Seshat Thanks, @LeahBergen @tpixie I wanted to have a picture of the inscription, too, but Litsy only allows one picture. 5y

Imitatio Christi is a wonderful classic devotional book for any and every Christian in all walks of life. Thomas À Kempis wonderfully lays out important aspects of the Christian Life and discuss hard questions such as seeking and finding comfort from God rather than Man or how and why to deny yourself and follow the will of God.
