This was my last book finished in 2021.

Nezhukumatathil's poetry finds metaphor and meaning in nature, particularly the aquatic, to accentuate her personal poems about love, being a mother, and life in general with its joys and sorrows. There are poems that speak to the destructiveness of climate change, sensuous poems that liken ourselves to like fish or other animals, poems full of wonder, deep admiration, & awe for the natural world.

“Give me a church/
made entirely of salt.
Let the walls hiss/
and smoke when/
I return to shore.
I ask for the grace/
of a new freckle/
on my cheek, the lift/
of blue and my mother‘s/
soapy skin to greet me.”

‪I enjoyed these poems. It seems to me that the collection is largely about oneness and otherness, both asserting our fundamental connection (especially via nature metaphors) but also showing the ways we make each other foreign. ‬I particularly liked the juxtaposition of the tenderness of the love poems with the wonder of the nature imagery. And there‘s humor here, too. Really liked this book.

This is what I think of as dense poetry. In the fact that it took quite a bit of concentration from me and is one that will once again deserve revisiting at a later date.
The variety in this collection is great. Environmental poems mixed in with ones about love and myths.
I‘ll look for more by this author in the future.

I loved this poem and I now feel inspired to try and make a daughter tarot card.

Weaponxgirl @mhillis I‘ve been loving you guys doing #poetrymatters but still feel like I‘m only just scratching the surface on poetry. 5y

There is a lot of variety in this collection. Some poems were sensuous and unhurried. Others had great images of ocean life and the natural world. Some, like One-Star Reviews of the Taj Mahal, were funny and sad at the same time. Overall, these were enjoyable to read.
