Be My Enemy
Be My Enemy | Christopher Brookmyre
4 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
It was a junket, a freebie. A 'team-building' weekend in the highlands for lawyers, advertising execs, businessmen, even the head of a charity. Oh, and a journalist, specially solicited for his renowned and voluble scepticism - Jack Parlabane. Amid the flying paintballs and flowing Shiraz even the most cynical admit the organisers have pulled some surprises - stalkers in the forest, power cuts in the night, mass mobile phone thefts, disappearing staff, disappearing guests: there's nothing can bring out people's hidden strengths or break down inter-personal barriers quite like not having a clue what's going on and being scared out of your wits. However, when the only vehicular access for thirty miles is cut off it seems that events are being orchestrated not just for pleasure ... And that's before they find the first body. Thereafter, 'finding out who your colleagues really are' is not so much an end product as the key to reaching Monday morning alive.

#two4tuesday @TheSpineView
Thanks for the tag @The_Penniless_Author ?

1) When I see this post, a Sin-City-style husky voiceover starts narrating my day ?

I think of noir as gritty crime drama with moral ambiguity, corruption, a lone detective with relationship problems drinks whisky and stares out a window into the rain..

2) Tagging some "Tartan Noir" from the inimitable Brookmyre. Am I bending the definition? Yeah, but it's a great book ?

TheSpineView Thanks for playing! 2y
RaeLovesToRead @TheSpineView Love a bit of noir 😊 2y

RaeLovesToRead @vivastory If you've ever been forced to attend team building activities, Be My Enemy is great ? Not sure he'll be your thing, but it's a good book to dip a toe with. He also writes sci fi under "Chris Brookmyre" and Victorian murder mysteries with his wife under "Ambrose Parry". 2y
vivastory I'm pretty sure if Dante were alive today there'd be a circle of the inferno including team building activities 🤣 2y
RaeLovesToRead @vivastory True!! 🤣🤣🤣 2y

Pickpick

After the drama of the last bk Jack parlabane seems to be avoiding trouble so when the cynical anti establishment journalist is invited on a team building weekend in a remote Scottish ancestoral home Hotel what can go wrong. Not for the faint hearted this is both very bloody but very darkly funny with some right wing extremists out to cause mayhem. I love this series.

And finally, from my favourite Tartan Noir purveyor; Chris Brookmyre, this masterpiece is a must for anyone whose ever been on a teambuilding weekend they weren't exactly enthusiastic about. (3/3)
