The Big Umbrella | Amy June Bates, Juniper Bates

A subtle, deceptively simple book about inclusion, hospitality, and welcoming the other. Kirkus Reviews A boundlessly inclusive spirit...This open-ended picture book creates a natural springboard for discussion. Booklist This sweet extended metaphor uses an umbrella to demonstrate how kindness and inclusion work...A lovely addition to any library collection, for classroom use or for sharing at home. School Library Journal In the tradition of Alison McGhees Someday, beloved illustrator Amy June Bates makes her authorial debut alongside her eleven-year-old daughter with this timely and timeless picture book about acceptance. By the door there is an umbrella. It is big. It is so big that when it starts to rain there is room for everyone underneath. It doesnt matter if you are tall. Or plaid. Or hairy. It doesnt matter how many legs you have. Dont worry that there wont be enough room under the umbrella. Because there will always be room. Lush illustrations and simple, lyrical text subtly address themes of inclusion and tolerance in this sweet story that accomplished illustrator Amy June Bates cowrote with her daughter, Juniper, while walking to school together in the rain.

This is the picture book selection for my library‘s 2023 Community Read program. The art and colors are lovely. The story is simple and sweet. The umbrella always has room and makes room to shelter those in need. 💙

The Big Umbrella, by Amy June Bates and Juniper Bates, and illustrated by Amy June Bates is published on February 6th, 2018. This book is a fictional children's book and won the Carolyn W. Field Award (PA). A child in a yellow slicker takes a big, red umbrella out on a rainy day. The umbrella helps everyone stay dry, no matter if they are tall, hairy, plaid, or have four legs. It likes to take people (and other creatures) in and give them shelter.

KDrake This looks like a wonderful children's book that I would want to be included in my classroom library to promote & encourage an all-inclusive environment for students. Cute and colorful book cover illustration! 😍🌧🌂 5y

A friendly umbrella just wants to help, no matter who you are.

“Some people worry that there won‘t be enough room under the big umbrella. But the amazing thing is...there is.

There is always room.”
