It's 1944, and a little village in rural Quebec sits quietly beside an aging mountain and an angry river. The air tastes of kelp, and the wind keeps knocking over the cross. Beside that river an eleven-year-old girl lives with her parents. Her mother is very sad, and her father has vanished because he can't bear to look at his own daughter. You see, this little girl has suddenly sprouted a full beard. And so her mother has shut the curtains and locked the girl inside to keep her safe from the townspeople, the Boots, who think there's something wrong with a bearded little girl. And when they come for her, she escapes into the wintry night...

Pickpick

I‘m not quite sure what to make of this dark fairytale set in 1940s Quebec. It‘s in the voice of an 11-year-old bearded girl, on the run from the men in her village. Strange, but poetic and mesmerizing. #Translation from French by Rhonda Mullins. #CanadianAuthor

The forest that surrounds me opens wide onto the rest of the world, treetops pointing to the sky. It is meditating; its thoughts are carried on the wind through the leaves, like thousands of prayer flags.

All women perform a comedy of manners when putting on makeup; I learned to be a clown.

DivineDiana Fantastic! 👏🏻❤️🤡 6y
Lindy @DivineDiana My niece was in a clown course last year. This photo is from her graduation, although she‘s not in this part that I cropped. (edited) 6y

Lindy @AnneCecilie I‘m glad you like it. I took that photo outside the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. 6y
AnneCecilie @Lindy I would love to visit that museum. It doesn‘t look like a Van Gogh. 6y
Lindy @AnneCecilie It‘s a close-up detail of one of his self-portraits. So interesting to see each brushstroke and the colour choices. 6y

Mehso-so

Little Beast was a short read about a young girl who has been confined to her home for years due to her beard, but is forced to flee into the forest. There were shining moments in this book, but more often than not I found myself getting a bit lost and having to go back to re-read. I think the book could have been better if it was a bit longer and more flushed out. The photo is from Google - I apologize for the low quality! #canlit #emwf18
