It makes their books completely unreadable. About The Lodger By Marie Belloc Lowndes Marie Belloc Lowndes's pen name was Belloc Lowndes. Lowndes was an early 20th century British novelist. A Jack the Ripper type murderer was killing young blonde women in the London fog. When a lodger comes to the Bunting house their daughter is taken with this mysterious man. Her boyfriend is a detective assigned to the murder cases. He is jealous and suspicious of the stranger. In the conclusion the stranger is forced to flee and is almost killed by a mob when a policeman arrives with the truth about the killings. This novel became a movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

This was chock full of psychological suspense. I found the denouement a little disappointing but also realistic in a way. In the end, this had a lot to say about the effects of suspicion on one‘s psyche. I feel like one could read into the themes more but for me this was an entertaining, escapist, and well written story- just what I needed right now to take my mind of the stress of moving. I‘m going to watch the Hitchcock film later today.

Bookwomble I think I read the story in a collection of Jack the Ripper themed tales. The film I've definitely watched, and it's fantastic and atmospheric. Enjoy! 😊 11mo
psalva @Bookwomble Thanks! I‘m looking forward to it. I‘m tempted to start reading all the books Hitchcock made into films and do side by side comparisons. 11mo
Bookwomble @psalva That would be an interesting project! 😁 Off the top of my head, I know I've read Conrad's The Secret Agent, was an early Hitchcock adaptation as Sabotage, and also Vertigo, which was just as thrilling a read as the film is to watch. 11mo

I was super excited when I found this 1940s copy. I just live vintage book covers.

Fantastic! A wonderful story which unfolds in largely 1 house, delving deep into characterization and ambience.
There is no gore or any real TW in this one -just good ol' creepy unease.
I'm not sure how it happened but all 3 books I was/am reading are by female authors and are set at least partially in late 1800s/early 1900s. Go figure.

Oooh how creepy! This slow moving thriller, light on action, but heavy on atmosphere is exactly what I look for in a scary book. Thank you again @Pogue for including this in my excellent #MyBloodyValentineSwap package!

Now off to the Atlanta United block party!! Sha la la la la la la...

LeahBergen This was published first as a short story and then expanded into a novel. Both are included in Otto Penzler‘s Jack the Ripper and now you‘ve made me want to read it ASAP. 😆 (edited) 6y
mklong @LeahBergen Ooooh that book sounds amazing!! 6y

What if you suspect the mysterious guest in your house is really a serial killer? That's the question driving this intense suspenseful thriller, based on the Jack the Ripper murders.
