It's an election year in Togo, where Africa's longest serving ruler is hanging on to power. Marius, amateur philosopher and jazz enthusiast, has left his life as a Ghanaian intelligence officer and is living in Lomé. He likes nothing better than a beer at his friend Mibou's jazz bar, especially when Louis plays trumpet. But Louis is found hacked to death on a beach near Lomé. Police assume he was dealing drugs, but Marius and his friends know better. They decide to try to clear Louis' name and find the real killer. Marius pieces together Louis' last hours; one minute he was talking on his mobile, the next he seems to vanish into thin air. Could there be a connection with two other shootings? Witnesses talk about a mysterious grey car and Marius and his friends determine to track down the car and its driver. Lomé is under the surveillance of a dictatorial government and Marius and friends have been careful not to attract attention. But menacing things start to happen, then Mibou is arrested for Louis' murder and thrown into the notorious Prison Civile. Finding Louis' killer is no longer a choice; it's the only way to get Mibou out of jail. Marius establishes the identity of the car and its driver and guesses that the President's half-brother Paulie is behind the murders. Helped by a police captain and some camouflage gear, Marius extracts a confession from the driver of the car. Armed with the confession and other evidence he persuades a high court judge to take up the case. Louis' name is cleared, a potential coup is uncovered and the killers arrested. A more reflective Mibou is released from jail and Marius and friends celebrate at the jazz bar.

#wondrouswednesday Thanks for the tag @MoonWitch94 !

1) The Fruit of the Drunken Tree-mostly Bogotá, Colombia
2) tagged (set in Lomé, the capitol of Togo, Africa)
3) I don‘t keep up with publication dates so I had to google and found this one: The Witch in the Well by Camilla Bruce, a mystery set in Norway. Since I‘ve been to so many places there I can often visualize the settings.

Eggs My maternal ancestors hailed from Norway 🇳🇴 2y
MoonWitch94 Ohhh that sounds like a good read coming! 2y

Pickpick

A musician is murdered but the police, justice system, the whole government are corrupt. Indeed, any could have committed it. How can his friends find the murderer & help another musician in trouble with the law without ending up dead? This is an extraordinarily well-crafted murder mystery set in #Togo, with a set of Jazz fans trying to solve the murder with the thinnest of leads in a vastly corrupt world. Very well done; highly recommended.

Texreader I am puzzled and saddened by the poor Litsy score for this book. I‘m glad I‘ve read it and plan to read book 2. I stayed up till 3 am to finish it something I rarely do for even the best of books. There were a few bad typos towards the end but I‘m experiencing that so much lately I‘m not dinging it for that. This is an excellent murder mystery set in #Togo. I‘m trying to understand its 0 rating on Litsy because it is extremely well-written and I‘m learning an immense amount about Togo and this part of Africa. #readingafrica2022 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Employing my new idea to use google satellites to map where I am reading, here I am in Lomé, the capitol of #Togo. #readingafrica2022 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

GingerAntics What a cool idea. 2y

Librarybelle This is great! I love this idea 2y
KristiAhlers I love this idea! I‘m super visual too so I‘ve been hauling out my dads NatGeo coffee table atlas. One thing I didn‘t mind moving into the house after we brought him to live with us last year. 2y

I‘ve decided to replace an ebook I‘ve bailed on with this one for #Togo #readingAfrica2022. It may not be much better than the one I bailed on based on ratings, but I don‘t have a backup for this country. It does look short so hopefully it‘s a quick read. @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

P.S. The first paragraph is promising. I like this author‘s writing style much better than the book I just bailed on, and so far nothing gruesome or grotesque.

Hooked_on_books Here‘s my plan for Togo if this one doesn‘t work out for you: 2y
BarbaraBB I‘m going to read the same book as @Hooked_on_books for Togo 2y

Mehso-so

This #KindleUnlimited mystery was my #Togo pick for the #ReadAroundTheWorldChallenge- and it was certainly a good view into an African country that I didn‘t know much about! The writing style leaned towards more telling than showing and head-hopped a lot, but I did finish another one off my TBR! #OrnamentHunt Too big for the palm of my hand #WinterGames #ReadNosedReindeer 26 pts
