Merchants of Culture
Merchants of Culture: The Publishing Business in the Twenty-First Century | John B. Thompson
3 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
These are turbulent times in the world of book publishing. For nearly five centuries the methods and practices of book publishing remained largely unchanged, but at the dawn of the twenty-first century the industry finds itself faced with perhaps the greatest challenges since Gutenberg. A combination of economic pressures and technological change is forcing publishers to alter their practices and think hard about the future of the books in the digital age. In this book - the first major study of trade publishing for more than 30 years - Thompson situates the current challenges facing the industry in an historical context, analysing the transformation of trade publishing in the United States and Britain since the 1960s. He gives a detailed account of how the world of trade publishing really works, dissecting the roles of publishers, agents and booksellers and showing how their practices are shaped by a field that has a distinctive structure and dynamic. This new paperback edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to take account of the most recent developments, including the dramatic increase in ebook sales and its implications for the publishing industry and its future.

I haven‘t splurged on an order from Book Outlet in a long time, so a couple weeks ago I decided to splurge. My beautiful stack of books about books and bookish people and bookish things arrived 💕

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Word by word is so interesting! 4y

I don't have as much time to read for fun since starting classes, but at least getting your masters in publishing allows for interesting textbooks.

I may or may not hide my book buying evidence in my garage before coming into the house 😀 I know I'm not fooling anyone though...

[DELETED] 2232195534 Ha!! Thought I was the only one who did that! 😂 8y

Donna_sBookMinute LOL! No they just let us think we're getting over. Reminds me of a little stunt I'd pull to hide new clothing purchases. Walked right past him with the "dry cleaning." 8y
Varshitha I have been there too😂😂 8y
Karen3 I hid my last book haul in the trunk of my car and slowly brought a few in at a time 😂 8y
Hugoreads Back when I was married I used to stash the books under the seats in the car until I could "sneak" them in. Imagine the hubs surprise when he drove my car and had to slam on the brakes! My library came flying to the front! Ha ha...I kept all the books but got rid of the husband. 8y
Simona I do that too, but my excuse is "they are from the library" ? 8y
LauraBeth Whew - glad to see I'm not the only one ☺️ @kaysreadinglife, @Lola, @Blair_Reads, @StephBengtson, @Laura317, @Varshitha Thanks for the Litsy support group! 8y

LauraBeth For us trunk hiders - I'm talking to you @Karen3 - I usually am reminded that I have books hidden in my trunk when the hubby wants to go to the grocery store and wants to take my car. I have a sudden panic when I remember - "let's take your car instead!" 8y
LauraBeth LOL @Hugoreads - that is hilarious! 8y
LauraBeth Taking tips from @Simona - good one - I can use that in my repertoire 😀 8y

LauraBrook Once when I was trying to invisibly whisk a large, full B&N bag into my house (between two totes), my mom caught me. I lied and said they were bday presents. "For whom?" I rattled off three names. "Really, let's wrap them right away, then!" Couldn't let her think I was keeping them for myself...So we wrapped all the books. And after she went home I unwrapped them all and was just as excited as if they were presents for me. 8y
LauraLeah @LauraBrook love this story! 8y
