The Job of the Wasp: A Novel | 
A new (and somehow fitting) bookmark for my new book. So far I can't tell if the book is poorly written or just weird. I enjoy weird and am pulling for that. The narrator feels unreliable, but definitely not in a Gone Girl kind of way and I think it's weirding me out a bit.
so-soA stylised, surreal and gothic ghost story set in a “temporary holding facility with mandatory educational elements” for orphaned boys. Lord of the Flies x The Turn of the Screw x um, Scooby Doo? It didn‘t entirely work for me, but hurrah for a commitment to the weird!
Just in time for day 15 of #riotgrams, these #hotbooks from my library holds arrived this week. Truly hot off the presses, these are my dates for the weekend. Bye.
so-so⭐️⭐️⭐️ The whole time I was reading I was thinking I didn‘t like it. I kept reading hoping it would improve; I can not decide if it improved or if I liked it. The whole time I was reading I was thinking how loose & random the plot was. I kept reading hoping it would firm up. I can‘t decide if it did. Strangely, I want to read it again, knowing now how it ends & see if I feel differently about it the 2nd time around.
so-soSoooo close to a pick but constant internal rhapsodizing and a really abrupt ambiguous ending overcame the really well done gothic atmosphere. It felt like trying to make out objects through muddied, obscured waters which worked for me but too many long passages of inner dialogue made the mood too distant rather than adding to it. Man this is a ride. I was not enjoying it at first, it was too clinical and oddly confusing for all that all of the events taking place were clearly laid out. All still true but I'm more hooked now 2/3 in of this short horror novel.

I‘m actually lying in bed today/tonight, really ill, with the bug that did the rounds on my son and my ‘other half‘; Roman had two days off school, got to watch TV all day today, and the man-child was on death‘s door with a vile cough. Now I have it and I have a head that‘s about to BLOW, and my usual MS aches and pains are 10X the strength to where I can hardly move. I got left to my own devices but luckily got to stare at my #bookmail / swaps 💓

pickA very quick, haunted school type story with a bunch of murders. It does get a little strange at the end as the mystery begins to unravel. A good creepy factor too, but not too much.
pickImagine Lord of Flies if it were a surreal, gothic ghost story written by Jesse Ball. That's the best way I can describe this bizarre little book. Although I wanted more cohesion from the narrative, I'm always grateful for the opportunity to read a novel like this that's so intelligent and peculiar. If you like Ball, Helen Phillips and Samanta Schweblin, you'll probably like this. Just be prepared to come away from it with a lot of questions.
pickI had so many plans to be productive on this sunny Saturday.. when I picked up this book, I knew within 5 minutes that my day would be spent reading. This was an outstanding book. Reminiscent of Shirley Jackson ( one of my favorite authors) this book was a grim, gothic compelling journey into the subconscious. Story as allegory? Or just a twisted tale? I loved it either way. 5/5!!
