Werewolves in Their Youth
Werewolves in Their Youth: Stories | Michael Chabon
2 posts | 15 read | 8 to read
Chabons second story collection, about couples and families suffused with yearning but crippled by broken love Paralysis in the face of insight afflicts many characters in this stunning volume. In the title story, a boy named Paul does nothing to protect his feral friend Timothy from the scorn of teachers and classmates alike, even though he knows the reasons for Timothys irritating games. In other stories, a young alpha couple sees a future together in the defects of a house up for sale, a heartbroken thief finds his ex-girlfriends grandma to be an easy mark, and a man drifts away from a wife who has experienced a terrible misfortune. At times darkly funny, and others achingly beautiful, Werewolves in Their Youth renders the sad compromises of adulthood and the vivid fantasies of childhood with clarity and warmth. This ebook features a biography of the author.

If there are any UK fans of Michael Chabon quite a few of his books are going cheap on Kindle at the moment!

saresmoore I definitely need to give Chabon another go. With the endorsements from you and @vivastory, I think it may have been a case of right book, wrong time. 6y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore which one did you try? 6y
saresmoore The Yiddish Policemen‘s Union—I was trying to finish a challenge and it fit a prompt, but I struggled to get into it and just set it aside. 6y

Moray_Reads Ah, I loved that one (it's mad!) but I definitely think you need to be in the right mood. Moonglow is my favourite but I recommend Kavalier and Clay too. I think both @vivastory and I started with that one 6y
vivastory @saresmoore Yes, Kavalier & Clay was my first Chabon & I absolutely loved it. It took me longer to finish than I'd like because of a busy week and other interruptions. I was really frustrated because I wanted everyone to leave me be while I read! 6y
saresmoore Okay, I will give that one a try! Thanks, friends! @vivastory @Moray_Reads 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @saresmoore I gotta weigh in here too. Reading Wonder Boys in high school showed me that I could love books that didn‘t have dragons or starships in them. I‘ve read 6 of his books (and spoken to him in person about comic books!) and they‘re all varying degrees of excellent. 6y
Moray_Reads @TobeyTheScavengerMonk @saresmoore Loved this one too! Even though on paper I would have expected to hate it. He's a fabulous writer 6y
saresmoore @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Now, there‘s an endorsement! That also gives me hope that it‘s a book my husband and I will both enjoy. 6y

Mehso-so

Does this title make anyone else think about Teen wolf?

So, you know how Gordon Ramsey on Master Chef always tells folks when they make a dish "three ways" to just do the best dish and skip the rest? Short story collections always seem to feel like that for me. The ones I love so outshine the least fabulous, that I feel disappointed almost every time. And yet, I continue to pick them up!!

Lindseyastin It's been awhile since I've read this! This holds true for short story collections for me too. Loved the title story a lot and a few others, meh on the rest! 7y
Cinfhen Tomorrow's#JuneTunz prompt is #wolves This would be perfect 👌🏽 7y
