Picture Us In The Light
Picture Us In The Light | Kelly Loy Gilbert
"Picture me madly in love with this moving, tender, unapologetically honest book." Becky Albertalli, William C. Morris Award winning author of Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda Danny Cheng has always known his parents have secrets. But when he discovers a taped-up box in his father's closet filled with old letters and a file on a powerful Silicon Valley family, he realizes there's much more to his family's past than he ever imagined. Danny has been an artist for as long as he can remember and it seems his path is set, with a scholarship to RISD and his family's blessing to pursue the career he's always dreamed of. Still, contemplating a future without his best friend, Harry Wong, by his side makes Danny feel a panic he can barely put into words. Harry and Danny's lives are deeply intertwined and as they approach the one-year anniversary of a tragedy that shook their friend group to its core, Danny can't stop asking himself if Harry is truly in love with his girlfriend, Regina Chan. When Danny digs deeper into his parents' past, he uncovers a secret that disturbs the foundations of his family history and the carefully constructed faade his parents have maintained begins to crumble. With everything he loves in danger of being stripped away, Danny must face the ghosts of the past in order to build a future that belongs to him.

I almost bailed on this book and I am so glad that I didn‘t. This book dealt with so many important topics. Human trafficking, immigration, teen suicide, adoption, and a teen finding out who he really is. There were times it broke my heart but the ending gave me hope. I loved how the main character had his art to express himself.

This is an emotionally hard book to read. The author tackles difficult issues of child trafficking, adoption, suicide, gender identity, immigration, and these all touch Danny, the main character in a very real way. It is a book that weighs heavy on the heart.

One of the most beautifully written, literary YA books I‘ve read in a long time. There are so many topics covered with such eloquence—immigration, suicide, sexuality, teen friendship—and I‘m in awe of how Gilbert weaves together the stories of all the complex characters. A must read!!

I haven‘t picked this book up in days & haven‘t had a desire to. I loved the writing; it was beautifully honest, but at the same time I never felt connected to the characters/plot or compelled enough to keep going. I felt as if I were reading words rather than a story. The pacing‘s also terribly slow, which long chapters don‘t help. I don‘t like feeling this empty & disenchanted w/ stories. So... I‘m putting it down.

I‘m almost done with this one. I just wanted to take a moment and say that I like the prose and the exploration of complex familial bonds and culture.

Okay, hoping this will be a better experience.

Danny Cheng is an aspiring artist who‘s always known his parents have their secrets. But when he discovers a box of stuff on a powerful Bay Area family, he realises there‘s much more to ‘em than he thought. Then a tragedy from the past makes him discover a mystery from his family history, threatening to destroy everything his family worked hard for.

Sounds amazing. Keeping my fingers crossed! 🤞🏽

My Nannies who Read group is reading queer books for Pride month. So I‘m diving into some of the queer YA I‘ve been hoarding, starting with this. If the words are as gorgeous as the cover, I‘ll be a happy woman.

I started reading this book yesterday afternoon and finished a little while ago. It consumed my mind until now.

I can't believe it hasn't gotten more buzz. It's beautifully written, with a profound, unflinchingly honest story and a narrator I'll not soon forget. If you even occasionally read YA and like literary novels, do yourself a favor and pick this up. You won't regret it.

This is such a beautiful book, in every possible way. It tackles tough issues, but in such a thoughtful and human way that you can‘t finish this book and not be changed by it.

Love this cover. For some reason it makes me think Saint Iggy. The story is nothing like Iggy, it just makes me think that way.
