Murder at the Flamingo
Murder at the Flamingo: A Novel | Rachel McMillan
10 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 14 to read
If Hamish DeLuca spent less time with his nose in a history book or studying for the bar exam, he might finally have the courage to ask a girl to dance at the Palais Royale. But despite his romantic nature, Hamish has always been shy and lacking the confidence of his friend and cousin, Luca Valari, who has invited Hamish to join him in Boston for the summer. Luca has just purchased a new dance club, The Flamingo, and could use Hamishs math and accounting skills to keep the books alongside Lucas right hand man Reggie Van Buren. Regina Reggie Van Buren, daughter of a wealthy pastor and heir to a New Haven fortune, is determined to make a life as the self-sufficient city girl she sees in her favorite Jean Arthur and Katharine Hepburn pictures. After a humiliating tea party, Reggie bids goodbye to fine china and the man her parents expect her to marry and escapes to Boston. Finding an easy secretarial job with the suave Luca Valari and a room at Miss Claras Boarding house in the North End, Reggie soon adapts to a world beyond servants and ironed linens. Her romantic prospects alight, too, when she sets eyes on Lucas cousin Hamish. When a corpse is discovered at The Flamingo, Hamish and Reggie trade ledgers and book-keeping for sleuthing skills. But the truth comes at a high price for Hamish who discovers a dark side to his beloved cousin and is forced to choose between loyalty and his conscience.

When the strawberries are about to go off, you get #audiobaking. You also reflect on how scones always look dodgy, even when they‘re perfectly fine.

I‘m about 60% into the tagged book now, and I totally understand its low Litsy rating. I‘m enjoying it, but anyone who goes in expecting a proper mystery is liable to be disappointed. This is really character-focused historical fiction with a crime component.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Those look delicious! 4y

My #audiowalk didn‘t feel especially hot, but when I got home I had to change every single item of clothing because oof. So much sweat.

Pickpick

Murder at the Flamingo is the first novel I‘ve read by Rachel McMillan & I am glad I read this book. Reading this novel is like stepping into a 1930s RKO masterpiece. I enjoyed everything: the sense of nostalgia, the references to classic films & actors/actresses, the setting descriptions, fabulous characters who endeared themselves to my heart almost immediately, & a tremendously engaging plot! Murder at the Flamingo is a definite #MustRead!

Crazeedi Looks good! Wonder if its similar to rex stouts 'nero wolfe" series I love them! 5y
TCFG16 I'm not sure. I've not read Nero Wolfe before. Another series to add to my TBR mountain. Lol! 5y

Mehso-so

Unfortunately this was probably closer to a “Pan” than a “So-so” for me. The murder from the title did not even happen until 56% into the story. And it was never really clear to me if it was an intentional murder or more of an accidental one (if that makes any sense). I found the writing often hard to follow and had no real feeling for any of the characters. And while this is the start of a series, I don‘t have plans to read more. 2.75/5⭐️ 🔽

robinb Thanks to #NetGalley and #ThomasNelson for the ARC. 6y
Jess_Read_This Bummer! This one has been on my TBR. I just picked up another book by this author to check out her style. 6y
robinb @Jess_Read_This Maybe it was just me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I felt very chagrined as when I was posting my review I noticed some others really enjoyed it. 😩🤔 I hate when that happens...makes me feel like I totally missed something! Don‘t let me turn you off it if you‘d like to try it. 6y

Jess_Read_This @robinb My library doesn‘t have it yet. So I settled on another of hers to see how I might like her. I‘ll let you know! 6y
robinb @Jess_Read_This thanks! I‘ll be interested to see what another is like. 6y
Jess_Read_This Ugh. I couldn‘t get into her books. I tried but the writing just felt “off” to me. Too forced and just awkward. I bailed on both. 6y
robinb @Jess_Read_This Sorry for your waste of time, but this makes me feel a little better about how I felt about it and my review. Just not for me. 6y

Well, life intervened in my reading plans more than I expected, so I didn‘t get close to 24 hours. Still, I finished 3 books and read another 3—a productive weekend, I‘d say. #24in48

I liked the characters - a young lady asserting her independence from her high society family and a bookish, shy young man trying to find his own path apart from his well-meaning but overbearing father - and the setting - 1930s Boston night club scene. Unfortunately the story didn't hold my interest. The murder didn't happen until more than halfway into the book and by the time they started to solve the mystery I was too bored to care anymore.

Amie I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. 6y

I'm enjoying this book, but what is the deal with female characters in books biting their lip?! Drives me a little crazy!
