Pops: Fatherhood in Pieces | Michael Chabon
18 posts | 14 read | 15 to read
Magical prose stylist Michael Chabon (Michiko Kakutani, New York Times) delivers a collection of essaysheartfelt, humorous, insightful, wiseon the meaning of fatherhood, anchored by the viral sensation, My Son, The Prince of Fashion. For the September 2016 issue of GQ, Michael Chabon wrote a piece about accompanying his son Abraham Chabon, then thirteen, to Paris Mens Fashion Week. Possessed with a precocious sense of style, Abe was in his element chatting with designers he idolized and turning a critical eye to the freshest runway looks of the season; Chabon Sr., whose interest in clothing stops at thrift-shopping for vintage western shirts or Herms neckties, sat idly by, staving off yawns and fighting the impulse that the whole thing was a massive waste of time. Despite his own indifference, however, what gradually emerged as Chabon ferried his son to and from fashion shows was a deep respect for his sons passion. The piece quickly became a viral sensation. With My Son, the Prince of Fashion as its centerpiece, and featuring six additional essays plus an introduction, Pops illuminates the meaning, magic, and mysteries of fatherhood as only Michael Chabon can.

I read this several months ago and was unimpressed at the time. The essays had all been published previously and I thought it was just a way to fulfill a book contract. However, there‘s one essay that I have thought about quite often in which Chabon instructs his teenage son on how “not to be a dick” to girls/women. I love that Chabon did that and I wish more dads (and moms) would do the same.

“Then he heads back out to perform one or more exams for one of the big insurance companies, often taking me with him.”

This is Michael Chabon describing as a child going to work with his dad who was a doctor. My dad used to take me to work with him. He was a door-to-door salesmen so I‘d ride around in the car with him on days I didn‘t have school. His customers would come out to the car to meet me. Those were the good old days, indeed!

laytonwoman3rd I used to go to work with my dad too. He drove a short milk tanker and picked up milk from small farms around the countryside. Sometimes we'd be invited in the house for coffee (milk or tea for me) and whatever the farmer's wife had just taken out of the oven. 6y
SqueakyChu @laytonwoman3rd Wasn‘t that fun?! I remember taking coloring books and other things to do while my dad left me in the car while he was in the house with his customers. These days that would be child neglect and illegal. For me, I always loved those days I got to go to work with my dad! 6y
laytonwoman3rd Can you imagine any company allowing an employee to take his 10 year old daughter in the truck these days? The liability issues! 6y

Essays by Chabon about his kids. I had read some before, but it was charming and reflective.

I‘m happiest with non-fiction, particularly essays and memoirs. I‘m not sure why. I used to love fiction, but not so much anymore. I like and appreciate the honesty in these essays about fatherhood. Chabon isn‘t afraid to be self reflexive and self critical and that makes his love for his children and his desire to be a good father shine even brighter.

From the short story “Little Man,” a wonderful description of a fashion show. Chabon‘s little son is a snappy dresser obsessed with clothes. #fashion #fatherhood #essays #humor

Read this on Thursday afternoons while my son is having swim lessons at the local hot springs. The water is warm, the shade is cool, and the sound of children splashing and laughing fills the air. Long been a fan of Chabon, and this recent little essay collection is a quick treat.

I just love Michael Chabon—I‘ve devoured all of his fiction—and this small, lovely collection of meditations on fatherhood reinforced my feelings. I listened to this one, which Chabon read himself, and I highly recommend the #audiobook!
