Industrial Magic: Women of the Otherworld | Kelley Armstrong
6 posts | 48 read | 9 to read
Meet the smart, sexy supernatural women of the otherworld. This is not your mothers coven... Kelley Armstrong returns with the eagerly awaited follow-up to Dime Store Magic. Paige Winterbourne, a headstrong young woman haunted by a dark legacy, is now put to the ultimate test as she fights to save innocents from the most insidious evil of all.. . . In the aftermath of her mothers murder, Paige broke with the elite, ultraconservative American Coven of Witches. Now her goal is to start a new Coven for a new generation. But while Paige pitches her vision to uptight thirty-something witches in business suits, a more urgent matter commands her attention. Someone is murdering the teenage offspring of the underworlds most influential Cabals a circle of families that makes the mob look like amateurs. And none is more powerful than the Cortez Cabal, a faction Paige is intimately acquainted with. Lucas Cortez, the rebel son and unwilling heir, is none other than her boyfriend. But love isnt blind, and Paige has her eyes wide open as she is drawn into a hunt for an unnatural-born killer. Pitted against shamans, demons, and goons, its a battle chilling enough to make a wild young woman grow up in a hurry. If she gets the chance. From the Paperback edition.

A much stronger book than the previous installment, this finds Paige collaborating on an investigation with Lucas and a “small army of supernaturals.” I didn‘t remember much but felt they were a little slow to pick up on some pretty obvious clues. Someone is killing Cabal children, starting with “the help” and working up the ladder. This was Feb‘s #roll100 #90 and it‘s done, if a bit late.

This book is set in October 2001, and has several references to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, especially the effect on air travel. And then this reference to Bush‘s election courtesy of Florida. As someone who remembers all of this (I was in college at the time; the attacks actually occurred the day after my 20 birthday) it works for me, but I have to wonder if it ages the book for other readers.

Hooked_on_books I think these kind of details can serve to anchor a book in the time it is set. Younger readers won‘t have a visceral connection with it the way we do, but I do think it will help them learn some details of those times. 2y
ravenlee @Hooked_on_books that‘s a good point, though I think the references to 9/11 and how people felt about flying in the aftermath might accomplish that better than this particular bit. 2y

“While his three eldest sons spent their adult lives toiling to improve the family fortunes, who had Benicio named as his heir? The illegitimate youngest son who had devoted his adult life to destroying the family business, or at least buggering it up real good...Either the man is a mastermind of family manipulation or just plain fucked in the head. I don't use that word much, but in some cases, nothing else fits.” #fortune #QuotsyJan19

A solid addition to the series, which I think is a must-read for supernatural (genre) fans. I love that while we were introduced to a couple of new characters, for the most part, this book just works on developing relationships between characters we already know (eg Paige and Lucas!). I genuinely enjoyed every minute of reading this.

I finally got the time today to sit down and finish this book. I love following these characters through the supernatural world. I really liked this book in particular because it had a lot of characters mentioned in previous books.
