If you decide you want to go to the moon, this is a great book to teach you how to get there! If You Decide To Go To The Moon, written by Faith McNulty and illustrated by Stephen Kellogg is a (inter)stellar SF book choice. This book takes students on journey through space with an aspiring astronaut whose goal is to reach the moon; he learns some very important lessons along the way and scientific facts too! #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 This book is a great independent read for students who are interested in science fiction! This link: https://www.nasa.gov/kidsclub/index.html is to NASA‘s children site and has so many great out of space games and interactive virtual lessons. ESOL strategy #46 the use of discovery learning through students virtual learning from NASA. UDL 6.3 aligns when students are using outside resources to seek information on a topic. 4y
LauraLeighn What an “(inter)stellar “ sounding book! This seems like a great book to give the student in your class whos dream is to be an astronaut! The resource being a NASA link is super smart, and I think your ESOL strategy lines up perfectly with this book. 4y
DrSpalding I love that you used NASA as a resource. I do not believe this is science fiction however I would have to read it again to be sure. English learner strategy 46 is just right. 4y

If You Decide To Go To The Moon By Faith McNulty and Illustrated by Steven Kellogg. This SF book is great to have student PR. The book is about a young boy who travels to the moon and back. The readers are able to follow along as he takes his excursion while also including some facts about space and space travel! It is out of this world! 😉 #ucflae3414su20

Viviannef UDL principle 3.3 Guide information processing and visualization and ESOL 4 strategy Link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge. The class could use the resource below to take a virtual trip to the moon as well as learn prior knowledge on space with a science lesson that can go hand in hand with this reading. 4y
Viviannef http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/blast-vocabulary-... – This website provides great resources for teachers to use when teaching with this book. The lesson provided takes students on a virtual moon trip and they cover vocabulary! 4y
dbears1 My favorite subject is science, so I will definitely use this book in my classroom.Going to the moon virtually is a great field trip to help student explore our universe. The vocabulary lesson plan is a great idea because students maybe unaware of the phases of the moon and its location. Great Post !!!!!! 4y
DrSpalding You have done a beautiful job varying your teaching strategies. Partner reading would be a fabulous idea. We have recently had several historic launches. It would be easy to make connections in your science curriculum to the real world. 4y

This SF picture book is a great way to integrate ELA with science for our students. This book explains in detail what do you need to know if you decide to go to the moon. In my future classroom, I would like to use this book as an interactive RA along with the lesson plan called Blast Off! (http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/blast-vocabulary-instruction-using-946.html) to teach technical vocabulary. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Zelymarie.R This lesson plan could help students clarify and/or learn technical vocabulary. UDL 2.1 and ESOL #5 4y
DrSpalding Quality resource that you should use often. Expand on your universal design and English learner strategies. 4y

This is a science fiction book all about the moon, stars, comets, asteroids, and more. It is as if the readers are going on a trip to the moon and we are learning about so much. Examples are what to eat while in space, what to do for fun, and what we will see while up there. I have a better understanding of what Astronauts experience. This is a good pick for a digital storytelling, because teachers can use real photos of space. #ucflae3414sp20

ShardaeP UDL: 1.3 Offer alternatives for visual information (this relates to the digital storytelling using real photos).
ESOL: use preview/review activities (there are plenty of interactive moon related activities on https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/search/moon/
4y
Agavitt1 I‘ll definitely have to check this book out! I‘m realizing how important it is to incorporate books that promote science in the classroom. I also like the UDL standard you listed because incorporating visual information (using real photos like you said) would be interesting for students! 4y
DrSpalding I like the idea of using real photos and you have an excellent resource noted! 4y

This book was SF by Faith McNulty and illustrated by Steven Kellogg. It is all about some fun facts when going to the moon from what you will eat, how far to travel, to activities you can do to help pass the time. It isn‘t a bad book but it isn‘t something that I would read to my students knowing they may not be interested. #ucflae3414f19

maciforster It would be great for IR so that the students who are interested in Space will find this book enjoyable. This website is great for fun little activities to do if you choose to use it as a read aloud instead: https://www.brighthubeducation.com/lesson-plans-grades-3-5/30871-if-you-decide-t... 4y
maciforster This could go along with EL strategy #39 since it relates to science and UDL principle 7.1 so that the students would be able to choose this book if they wanted to 4y
DrSpalding This is an honest post. This would be a good book to use as a read aloud during a science unit however… It is not science fiction if the book provides factual information. What genre? 4y

This SF picture book is a cute story that allows for students to step into the shoes of an astronaut, and see what it would be like to journey to the moon. The Parent‘s Choice Silver Honor award winning book tells you how to get to the moon, and what to do after you land. This book would work well as a RA because it really gets students engaged and excited. #ucflae3414f19

leximcmillin https://www.brighthubeducation.com/lesson-plans-grades-3-5/30871-if-you-decide-t... This is a good resource to use with this book because it includes cool hands-on activities that align with the book to really get the students engaged in the reading. A UDL principle that would go with this book wojld be 3.3 Guide information processing and visualization, because this book is all about visualizing. 4y
leximcmillin An EL strategy that aligns with this book is 2. Promote Cooperation. While you read the book, you can encourage students to visualize the things that the author is saying to do. 4y
DrSpalding Hands on activities work beautifully with books that focus on science content! This would be an excellent book to include in a space unit. 4y

If you decide to go to the moon by Faith Mcnulty is an SF book that would be great for PR. This picture book shares a young boys perspective on what a journey to the moon would be like, while also sharing space facts. A source that supports it should be a PR is http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/finding-science-b.... #ucflae3414f19

cassandram It shares how in SF books it‘s helpful to pair with students so they can distinguish the science from the fiction. This could be used with UDL 6.3 which is to mange information and resources. The students will manage what is the science part of this book and find resources that support it. I would pair this book with other space sources that would use ESOL strategy 29 to offer a variety of reference materials. #ucflae3414f19 4y
DrSpalding I like the idea of partner reading and I like the idea of this being a book you could use in a science lesson. Using other space resources is a great idea! This would not necessarily be considered science fiction as I believe most of the book is factual. 4y

This SF read is a story that takes the readers along on a ride to the moon. It‘s set in 2nd person to let the reader participate in the journey. This book is such a good boom for students to learn all the interesting facts of space travel. #UCFLAE3414SU19

UDL 2.1 can be encompassed in this link to a lesson plan on vocab instruction using a virtual moon trip. By working in small groups you can also incorporate ESOL strategy 2.

This Parent‘s Choice Silver Honor book is an excellent SF picture book to use in the classroom for a RA, PR or GR. The book is about a young boy who goes to the moon and back; the story describes to children what to expect if they are thinking about going to the moon with amazing illustrations to go along with the narrative. There are a few quotes that can make readers think, especially the final note

jvinas2 “Air and water are Earth‘s special blessings. We must guard them well.” I feel like this conscious message of environmental conservation is an important one to hear. ESOL strategies 4, 10, & 29 and UDL guidelines 2.2 & 3.1-3.3 are beneficial to utilize while reading the book because making sure students have prior knowledge of space and providing these materials to them will help readers understand what the author is trying to say. 6y
