Player One: What is to Become of Us | Douglas Coupland
4 posts | 12 read | 14 to read
In his 2010 CBC Massey Lectures acclaimed novelist and visual artist Douglas Coupland explores the modern crises of time, human identity, society, religion and macroeconomics and the afterlife in the form of a novel, a 5-hour story set in an airport cocktail lounge during a global disaster. Five disparate people are trapped inside: Karen, a single mother waiting for her online date; Rick, the down-on-his-luck airport lounge bartender; Luke, a pastor on the run; Rachel, a cool Hitchcock blonde incapable of true human contact; and finally a mysterious voice known as Player One. Slowly, each reveals the truth about themselves while the world as they know it comes to an end. The book asks as many questions as it answers, and readers will leave the story with no doubt that we are in a new phase of existence as a species -- and that there is no turning back.

I'm posting one book per day from the ever growing unread stacks in my personal library. No description or explanation, just books I own and plan to read. #tbr

#TBRtemptation post 8! In the tradition of Kurt Vonnegut & J.G. Ballard. This is a real-time, 5-hour story set in an airport cocktail lounge during global disaster. 5 people are trapped: Karen, a single mom waiting for an online date; Rick, a down-on-his luck bartender; Luke, a pastor on the run; Rachel, a cool Hitchcock blonde; Player One, a mysterious voice. They each reveal themselves as the world outside falls apart.#blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Pickpick

While I really enjoyed Player One by Douglas Coupland, initially a CBC Massey Lecture, I have to admit that even having read the book #ThisCoverMakesNoSense. Yes the action is at an airport, but never on a plane. Also, why is the individual on the cover raising their hand as though to ask a question? Is it because the book is subtitled "What is to become of us"? One of his better books, I recommend it to fans of Station Eleven. #ReadJanuary

Krysta This cover always bugged me too while I was reading it. And I am a Coupland fan... still don't get it. 7y
Pruzy @Krysta Which of his books is your favourite? 7y
Krysta @Pruzy Well I haven't read them all yet, but my father-in-law just lent me some more so hopefully I will! Currently I would say probably this one, then maybe Eleanor Rigby. Though Girlfriend in a Coma was the first Coupland I read that made me like his works, so that holds a special place. 7y

Krysta @Pruzy What about you? 7y
Pruzy @Krysta I really liked The Gum Thief, Jpod was ok, but holds the special place as being the first Coupland I read. Didn't mind generation A except for the end. Worst. Person. Ever. was just so-so. I haven't read Eleanor Rigby or Girlfriend in a Coma though, I should! (edited) 7y
Krysta I didn't mind J-Pod, but didn't love it either. I haven't read The Gun Thief yet but will add it to my tbr list! 7y
