Ma'am Darling
Ma'am Darling: 99 Glimpses of Princess Margaret | Craig Brown
From our funniest writer, a portrait of our most talked-about royal She made John Lennon blush and Marlon Brando clam up. She cold-shouldered Princess Diana and humiliated Elizabeth Taylor. Andy Warhol photographed her. Jack Nicholson offered her cocaine. Gore Vidal revered her. John Fowles hoped to keep her as his sex-slave. Dudley Moore propositioned her. Francis Bacon heckled her. Peter Sellers was in love with her. For Pablo Picasso, she was the object of sexual fantasy. "If they knew what I had done in my dreams with your royal ladies" he confided to a friend, "they would take me to the Tower of London and chop off my head!" Princess Margaret aroused passion and indignation in equal measures. To her friends, she was witty and regal. To her enemies, she was rude and demanding. In her 1950's heyday, she was seen as one of the most glamorous and desirable women in the world. By the time of her death, she had come to personify disappointment. One friend said he had never known an unhappier woman. The tale of Princess Margaret is pantomime as tragedy, and tragedy as pantomime. It is Cinderella in reverse: hope dashed, happiness mislaid, life mishandled. Combining interviews, parodies, dreams, parallel lives, diaries, announcements, lists, catalogues and essays, Ma'am Darling is a kaleidoscopic experiment in biography, and a witty meditation on fame and art, snobbery and deference, bohemia and high society.

Not a typical biography (and nor is it intended to be); this is funny, gossipy, irreverent and at times quite mean. I lost track of the huge number of people referenced, the timeline shifts all over the place and veers into fantasy at times, but it was fascinating nevertheless whatever your thoughts on the Royal Family. A glimpse, perhaps at times unreliable, of a privileged but also complicated and apparently often unhappy life. Cover gets a 🖤

teainthelibrary How funny, I just bought this at a thrift store! I‘m so interested in Margaret and her life! 4y

Next up.

I‘ve watched both seasons of “The Crown”. So when I saw this in the bookstores when I visited London last year, I had to have this. We don‘t get to know that much about Princess Margaret in the series, but what has been shown has sparked my interest to find out more. From the blurb, I think I will.

Eggs I want to read this so much, loved The Crown 5y
AnneCecilie @Eggs It‘s interesting so far, but I‘m only about 40 p in. It has been mostly anecdotes so far, but I hope these are just teasers to establish her personality before we learn more. 5y

I came into this book knowing very little about Princess Margaret. I really enjoyed finding out things about her in little doses. I only wish it had more pictures of her.

This book is giving me such joy! It‘s one that I got on my trip to the UK this summer. It‘s a witty, snarky, imaginative and irreverent look at one of the most polarizing royals of modern times! I‘m thoroughly enjoying it.

emilyhaldi I cracked up so many times reading this!! 6y
HardcoverHearts I‘m annoying my husband with my frequent outbursts of laughter that are too difficult to explain to share the joke. 😂 6y
AnneCecilie This was also one of the books that I bought when I visited London. I haven't gotten to it yet, but happy about seeing positive views of it. 6y

Mehso-so

A fascinating glimpse into the life of a Royal we don't really talk about much these days. I don't think I had ever heard of Princess Margaret before watching "The Crown" and that really is a shame as she certainly was an interesting woman! This book was a little long for my tastes as there is only so much gossip you can take before it starts to feel mean, yet I'd still recommend this for fans of the Royal Family. See my blog for more! ?

Mamashep I have gotten much more interested in Margaret after watching The Crown! 6y
QuintusMarcus My only memory of her is the Monty Python "Pantomime Princess Margaret" sketches! 6y

I‘m due to start this months reading in heels book as soon as I finish Phaedo and I‘m very excited. I‘ve already used the daytime eye mask and ate one of these DELICIOUS rosè wine gums!! (I will be buying a whole box, they are the best idea). It‘s certainly been great this month and going to be the one to top.

Do you subscribe? What did you think of the August birthday box!? #bookish #booklover

laurieluna Rosė wine gums sound amazing. 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @miralunasbooknook They taste so divine ! 6y
whatrebeccasread I subscribe to this box! I'm going to start reading on Monday and I'm expecting great things as I've fallen in love with Princess Margaret through watching The Crown. Let us know what you make of it once you're done! 👑 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @whatrebeccasread I‘m still to see The Crown but from the blurb she‘s sounds wild. I‘ll be sure to share my thoughts! I‘d love to hear yours too x 6y

I've just opened my second subscription box from Reading in Heels UK. Can't wait to get started on Ma'am Darling, has anyone read it yet?

Have you ever tried a book subscription box? Do you have any recommendations??

DimeryRene I get a box quarterly! I think the company is just Quarterly Co. It usually comes with two to three books and some bookish goodies. One of the books always has sticky notes from the author throughout. A nice touch! Gives insight to the story and their writing process. 6y
whatrebeccasread @DimeryRene oooh that sounds good! Are you in the UK? 6y
Rebesta Oooooo! This looks good. @DimeryRene - What‘s this club? I wouldn‘t mind checking out something like that. 6y

Stephjones01 That looks good! I tried Readinginheels last month and loved the look of the box and the goodies but I‘d already last month‘s book, Home Fires so didn‘t try it again this time. 6y
whatrebeccasread @DimeryRene thank you! 📚 6y
whatrebeccasread @Stephjones01 oh no, that's a shame! I suppose there is always that risk! 6y
Stephjones01 Yes, I hesitated for a while before trying ...I‘ll give it another go in September, maybe 6y
whatrebeccasread @Stephjones01 I suppose you could always give duplicates as gifts, or sell them on? I'm going to stick with it for a while and see how it goes but I'm definitely happy so far 👍🏻 6y
Stephjones01 That‘s what I thought I‘d do! It‘s a fantastic book. I‘ll definitely give it another go in the future. I also read on my kindle and have seen Ma‘am darling on offer this month so may buy it. Hope you enjoy it! 6y

I don‘t make monthly TBR because I just don‘t stick to them.. ever. Saying that, I intend to definitely read these three books in August. I‘ve started the journals of Anaïs Nin vol I and it is everything I could have hoped for. I‘ll be starting Little Fires Everywhere tomorrow and #maamdarling is this months read from @readinginheelsuk

What is a book you‘d love to read this month? #bookaddict #bookblog #bookworm #booklover
