#ArtfulAugust Day 19: As all adventures go, this crew of unlikely creatures – who can not really be described as ‘seaworthy‘ – encountered quite a number of difficulties along the way: from being lost, to being caught in a storm, to battling #pirates who are out to get them. A+ for the amazingly beautiful art, B- for “story”.

I was a tiny bit disappointed with this children‘s #picturebook only because I have high expectations for any that are illustrated by the Fan brothers, plus this is by the author of The 57 Bus (which I loved). And the pictures are lovely, but the story could be stronger. Still a pick, however. It ends with some great questions: “Is it better to know what‘s going to happen? Or better to be surprised?”

Marco had been feeling sorry for himself on this ship of herbivores. “Foxes aren‘t supposed to be vegetarian.” I like his solution: “he found a recipe book in the galley and cooked a warm and reviving stew.” If you aren‘t happy with your circumstances, take action.

“Island of Scrumptious Shrubbery” Ha! … Can you tell that seafaring deer made this map? #endpapers

Marco the fox is the adorable star of this #picturebook, but Victor the peg leg pigeon is pretty cute too.

3⭐️ This book seems to make it on a lot of best book lists. And while the illustrations are darling, the rest makes me wonder why. The story is a fox searching to questions about life, so he joins antlered ship to sail on adventure. The story is long and drawn out. This is not something I would read at storytime or on a regular basis.

#ReadingResolutions Day 20: As all #Adventure (s) go, this crew of unlikely creatures – who can not really be described as ‘seaworthy‘ – encountered quite a number of difficulties. I like how the entire narrative is not about finding the answers to thoughtful questions, ultimately; but as Rilke would have it, living the questions that find us. For those who are undecided, take the antlered ship. Allow it to take you where it leads.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk @shareyourghost got this for my son for Christmas and it was wonderful! The illustrations are fantastic. 6y

Super cute book — loved the illustrations. I loved Victor and his bandana 😂. I would love to use this for storytime but it‘s a bit too long.

As expected, the Fan Brothers‘ art is gorgeous but the story was a more philosophical, less kid-accessible version of The Friend Ship (tagged below). Another one to page through if you see it but not worth a buy for the story. Still a pick for the art!
