Zoo, Or, Letters Not about Love
Zoo, Or, Letters Not about Love | Viktor Shklovski?, Richard Robert Sheldon
5 posts | 2 read | 9 to read
While living in exile in Berlin, the formidable literary critic Viktor Shklovsky fell in love with Elsa Triolet. He fell into the habit of sending Elsa several letters a day, a situation she accepted under one condition: he was forbidden to write about love. Zoo, or Letters Not about Love is an epistolary novel born of this constraint, and although the brilliant and playful letters contained here cover everything from observations about contemporary German and Russian life to theories of art and literature, nonetheless every one of them is indirectly dedicated to the one topic they are all required to avoid: their author's own unrequited love.

Pickpick

This book is fantastic.
You know, sometimes I think reviewing books is nonsense-there is no rhyme or reason to why I like a book. With this one, I didn't even care to learn enough about events or people he was referencing because somehow just the tone and style of the whole thing had me smitten. Sometimes you just have a crush on a book and that's all there is to it. #newyearsreadathon

hermyknee Your review got me like, “must read!” 😝🙌🏽💕 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @hermyknee Even with the ridiculous typo I just found in the first sentence?! 😂 6y
batsy You're so right! About reviews and having a crush on a book like you would on a person and there's no point explaining it 💘 This sounds great! 6y

"My sorrow comes to see me and sits at the same table with me.
I have conversations with him.
Yet the doctor says that my blood pressure is normal and that my hallucination is only a literary phenomenon."

Occasionally you get some letters in reply; they are always my favorite.

The Perfect December Morning, or I Am Still Enjoying This Odd Russian Book, God Bless Odd Russians

TheWordJar God Bless Odd Russians, indeed! This book sounds like something I‘d very much enjoy. Stacked! 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @TheWordJar I need to read more about it bc by now I'm so confused about what is and isn't real--the situation is totally real on the part of the author but I would assume that these particular letters were not sent to the real woman because it IS a novel, except that I read in the introduction that she DID write the letters from her "character"! For the book? My head is spinning. 6y

I do not know how to show you all what's fascinating about this book without quoting you far too long a portion. All this to say, this book is both weird and cool and turning out even better than expected, I think.

LibrarianJen Sounds amazing! 6y
