Explorers' Sketchbooks
Explorers' Sketchbooks: The Art of Discovery & Adventure | Kari Herbert, Huw Lewis-Jones
4 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
The sketchbook has been the one constant in explorers' kits for centuries of adventure. Often private, they are records of immediate experiences and discoveries, and in their pages we can see what the explorers themselves encountered. This remarkable book showcases 70 such sketchbooks, kept by intrepid men and women as they journeyed perilous and unknown environmentsfrozen wastelands, high mountains, barren deserts, and dense rainforestswith their senses wide open. Figures such as Charles Darwin and Sir Edmund Hillary are joined here by lesser-known explorers such as Adela Breton, who braved the jungles of Mexico to make a record of Mayan monuments. Here are profiles, expedition details, and the artwork of pioneering explorers and mapmakers, botanists and artists, ecologists and anthropologists, eccentrics and visionaries. Here is the art of discovery.

I found this book to be very interesting. I originally got it for research into a character I was writing. It helped immensely. I definitely recommend this to any explorer or history buff.

Not feeling the best today and so I'm home on the couch with Sophie. I picked up this book recently thinking to do some character research for a novel I've been writing and it's very interesting! It has detailed pages from explorers such as Merriweather Lewis to David Livingstone and Alfred Russell Wallace. It's not all drawings by the way. It explains their trips and their research as well. Definitely worth a peek!

This book is gorgeous! It contains short biographies of various explorers and naturalists along with pages from their journals and sketchbooks that they kept on various outings. There are quick sketches, watercolors, photographs and written notes. This is a short read about some early explorers, some no longer well-remembered, with a lot of artwork that is stunning.

Texreader Sounds amazing. The people with that talent to sketch so well on the fly are incredible ! 7y
