Six Easy Pieces
Six Easy Pieces: Easy Rawlins Stories | Walter Mosley
2 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
Walter Mosley's bestselling and award-winning novels -- from Gone Fishin' to Devil in a Blue Dress, named one of the "100 Favorite Mysteries of the Century" by the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association -- have endeared him to legions of readers from a U.S. president to everyday people who can't get enough of Easy Rawlins. Now from the bestselling and award-winning writer comes Six Easy Pieces. The beloved Ezekiel Rawlins now has a steady job as senior head custodian of Sojourner Truth High School, a nice house with a garden, a loving woman, and children. He counts the blessings of leading a law-abiding life, but is "nowhere near happy." Easy mourns the loss of his best friend, Mouse. Though Easy tries to leave the street life behind, he still finds himself trading favors and investigating cases of arson, murder, and missing people. People who can't depend on the law to solve their problems seek out Easy. A bomb is set in the high school where Easy works. A man's daughter runs off with his employee. A beautiful woman turns up dead and the man who loved her is wrongly accused. Easy is the man people turn to in search of justice and retribution. He even becomes party to a killing that the police might call murder. Six of the seven stories in Six Easy Pieces were published in reissued Washington Square Press editions of the Easy Rawlins mysteries Gone Fishin', Devil in a Blue Dress, A Red Death, White Butterfly, Black Betty, and A Little Yellow Dog. A seventh, "Amber Gate," is newly published here, making this new Walter Mosley classic a must-have for all fans of great fiction.

I‘ve been working my way through the Easy Rawlings series in order. They are quick reads for me, and I like the continuing characters. The stories and characters almost always turn out more complex than they first appeared. I also like the perspective of a Black man writing honestly about life in Compton and Watts in the mid-20th century. I know some people who could learn some social history lessons from these books.

SamAnne I plan to do this as well after reading the first in the series. 3y

I live in a tiny village in rural Vermont but am continually blessed by the placement of this small village. Johnson State College, a small college of 1,700 students, is a 5 minute drive away. This weekend Is alumni weekend and Walter Mosley and Jensen Beach, both alumni, will be reading and signing books. It's also Home Day in the village where a parade goes up Main Street, turns around and comes back, and it lasts all of 10 minutes.

CocoReads Sounds lovely. Walter Mosley was at our library in the spring because Devil in a Blue Dress was our One Book but I didn't get to go because it was the same night as book group. 😢 (edited) 7y
Suet624 @CocoReads Bummer that you missed him. I'm just excited authors take the time to come all the way up here. It's not like there's a lot to do! But a lot of authors come here because of Vermont Studio Center too so I get to go to a lot of readings of soon-to-be or already-famous authors. It makes me so happy. 😀 7y

AmyG Wow...I didn't know this about Walter Mosely. Nice! 7y
saresmoore I love this! And I think ten minutes is the perfect parade length. 7y
minkyb Wonderful! 7y
Suet624 @saresmoore I think the Captain is going to be in the parade this year. 😁 riding in an old fashioned car. 7y
Suet624 @AmyG I was quite surprised when I read that he was an alumni! 7y
saresmoore Yeah, I'm gonna need photographic evidence of that. 7y
Suet624 😁 will do. 7y
Posemn Your little village sounds pretty perfect! 7y
Suet624 @Posemn my friends think I'm crazy to have moved to such a small place away from all the action. But the writers are abundant and there are at least 2 free concerts a week in surrounding towns. 😁 7y
Posemn We live in a small town in MN - used to be a hangout for F Scott and Zelda so lots of fun history. We are only 20 or 30 minutes from the Twin Cities so we have the best of both worlds! MN is our 9th state and definitely our favorite place to live. Friends and family think we are crazy as well! 😉 7y
Suet624 @Posemn I've had 3 different conversations lately with friends who are in love with the Twin Cities! Kind of random. 😂😂 it sounds like you have the perfect setup with the city being so close. 7y
