Penric's Demon: A Fantasy Novella in the World of the Five Gods
Penric's Demon: A Fantasy Novella in the World of the Five Gods | Lois McMaster Bujold
On his way to his betrothal, young Lord Penric comes upon a riding accident with an elderly lady on the ground, her maidservant and guardsmen distraught. As he approaches to help, he discovers that the lady is a Temple divine, servant to the five gods of this world. Her avowed god is The Bastard, "master of all disasters out of season," and with her dying breath she bequeaths her mysterious powers to Penric. From that moment on, Penric's life is irreversibly changed, and his life is in danger from those who envy or fear him. Set in the fantasy world of the author's acclaimed novels The Curse of Chalion, Paladin of Souls, and The Hallowed Hunt, this novella has the depth of characterization and emotional complexity that distinguishes all Bujold's work.

Had a blast listening to the first instalment in the Penric & Desdemona series - it‘s a fairly gentle, low stakes fantasy (accidental castle burning aside).

Started my Spring Break by reading Penric‘s Demon. The first novella in this compilation. I have listened to Penric‘s Fox a while back so it was nice to get the beginning of the story. Love Bujold‘s worlds as usual.

I loved this novella! When Pen stops to help an old lady on the road, she ends up bequeathing him her demon. Desdemona, the name Pen gives the demonic collective, has to help protect Pen from those out to get him. 1/15 for #Jumpstart2020.

I want to check 1-2 off my #Booked2020 list.
I want to check 1-2 off my #Nonfiction2020 list.

Loose-leaf Links is a feature where I gather together the interesting bits and pieces on sci-fi, fantasy and romance I've come across and share them with you over tea.

In today's news, the New York Times cops flack over their romance round-up. Angry Robot Books will soon open to unagented manuscripts. And Lois McMaster Bujold announces a new Penric and Desdemona novella.

Penric's Demon by Lois McMaster Bujold has been nominated for a Hugo Award and I can see why. This lovely fantasy novella makes an excellent introduction to Bujold's work and the World of Five Gods. I liked Penric. He's reasonably intelligent but naïve. However, while I love a character with a sense of wonder, it was Penric's kindness that really endeared him to me. Well worth reading.
