Before Night Falls
Before Night Falls | Reinaldo Arenas
8 posts | 20 read | 17 to read
This shocking memoir by the Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas is a book about sexual, political and artistic freedom. In Before Night Falls, Arenas recounts his journey from a poverty-stricken childhood in rural Cuba to his death in New York four decades later. He tells of his odyssey from young rebel fighting for the Revolution, through his suppression as a writer, his disillusionment with Castro, his imprisonment and torture, to his eventual flight from Cuba. Now a feature film starring Javier Bardem and Johnny Depp, Before Night Falls is a stunning testament to an individual?s urge to create against all odds.

Mehso-so

First of all, I'm glad to have read this. However, it was a very challenging book to get through. Arenas, who was a gay writer in Cuba during the Batista and Castro regimes and a survivor of an impoverished youth, writes about his life candidly. His descriptions of childhood were often disturbing. The anecdotes of his sexual encounters bored me to death. These were sometimes peppered with braggadocio, and an often machismo tone, which didn't help.

psalva However, it's important to remember that this was someone who grew up in impoverished conditions and was continually oppressed. In his own words, “I had never been allowed to be a real human being in the fullest sense of the word.“ With that in mind, it becomes understandable that he would focus on what brought him the most joy in life, his sexual encounters, as well as relationship with literature and the sea. 2y
psalva In fact, when you look closer at this book, you become aware of the lyrical and melancholic tones that Arenas is evoking, and those moments become quite poignant. Overall, he seems to have had an unfulfilled and tragic life. I would recommend this book to those who want to learn more about Arenas as a writer and to those who would like to know more about gay culture in Cuba during this time, especially in the literary world. 2y
psalva Just know going in that his was not a happy life, nor a full one, and be mindful of the context of his situation as you read. 2y

Before Night Falls | Reinaldo Arenas

I'm reading this for LGBTQ Books in Translation, but I'm finding it very difficult to finish. With only 50 pages left, it's become a drag. I'm tired of the machismo quality in the narrative. The difficulty with this book is trying to remember the context in which it was written. From page one this has been a challenge, as Arenas' earliest memories are disturbing to read about. I think I'll be glad to finish this and be done with it.

Pickpick

Done reading Before Night Falls by Reinaldo Arenas and I thought it was sad, grisly, unsettling but ultimately moving memoir in the midst of repression and fear. Told in chronological account of his life, Reinaldo Arenas was quite a character; a larger than life persona, who endured dictatorships from Batista to Castro in Cuba. As a gay writer, he was particularly pursued by the government and tagged as counterrevolutionary. 👇

thevagabondlawyer He was silenced and threatened but he persisted and ended in the most grueling of fate almost too difficult to bear. I have not read any of his books before reading this one - the summation of his personal life from cradle to grave. This book started really promising, the prose was simple yet beautiful, with occasional wry humor, but the twists and turns were quite daunting with seemingly flyaway strands that were not easily pulled together. 👊📚 3y

The tagged book is Arenas' autobiography. One of the greatest Latin American writers, it is an extraordinary account of his life. Spans a pre-revolutionary childhood to initial enthusiasm for, & eventual disillusionment with, the Cuban revolution & ultimately exile in New York. Arenas tragically died at 47, after being diagnosed with AIDS. He faced imprisonment, censorship & adversity. Yet, his work is ultimately a courageous celebration of life.

vivastory @LauraJ Same here. I loved all of his books, especially Singing From the Well & The Assault. I also really liked The Color of Summer, such an outrageous satire! 5y

It‘s incredible what some people live through. Arenas was persecuted under Fidel Castro‘s rule for being a writer and a gay man and this memoir is an honest, open, brutal account of his fight for freedom and the oppression he and his friends lived through. I‘m definitely going to read more about Cuba and its history. #readathon

Reinaldo Arenas, Cuban gay novelist, completed this memoir shortly before his suicide in 1990, just 3 years after being diagnosed with AIDS. front for Castros Regime, as a training facility. His novels were banned in the country because of their homosexuality, so he smuggled them abroad to be published.
This is a fascinating as well as frightening memoir, told with candor and honesty. I'm going to look for more Arenas books
