Make Space: A Minimalist's Guide to the Good and the Extraordinary | Regina Wong
3 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
A Minimalist Life is a beginner’s handbook to minimalism. It teaches readers that minimalism is not just a series of actions but also a total mindset shift. It recognizes that modern day abundance has not increased our level of happiness--in fact we are less happy than generations before despite having more--and it argues that embracing less will allow us to live more fully. The author gives us the tools to achieve this complete life-changing mental shift, teaching us how to search for items and thoughts that add value to our lives and how to get rid of non-essential physical and mental clutter. The holistic book marries minimalist philosophy with practical tips, activities, and action points, such as crafting a minimalist budget, reducing possessions, decluttering space, and clearing the mind of negative emotions.

Bailedbailed

Bailed an hour in.
I felt like I was being told off. I didn't like the patronising tone in the reader.

Holy privilege batman. Rather than teach me about minimalism, this just made me feel poor. She told me I can be debt free if I put my mind to it 😳 then she spent $3k on new furniture after decluttering cause her Balinese aesthetic wasn‘t working for her anymore. If I‘m positive I‘ll ‘attract money‘. My possessions fit in one room that I share mate. I‘m attracting money as hard as I can.

TheAromaofBooks I understand the theory of paring down unnecessary possessions, but also feel like a lot of minimalist books seem to think everyone has enough money to just buy new things when they need them - e.g. you don't fit in this shirt so just get rid of it and buy a new one if you lose/gain that 5lbs again... or I could keep it since I know I'll probably fit in it again after Christmas and don't want to spend the money over again?? 4y
Emilymdxn @TheAromaofBooks she also seems to think I‘ve been spending in really REALLY frivolous ways that I can‘t believe most people do. The book suggested I probably have bought 3 identical cheese graters without realising and have never touched 20% of the clothes in my wardrobe which seems really odd to me. 4y
TheAromaofBooks Oh my gosh, she's totally right! I would have so much more space and freedom if I ditched all of my cheese graters! Best tip ever! 🙄 4y
Emilymdxn @TheAromaofBooks we‘d all be debt free if it weren‘t for the cheese graters 4y

Thought this was about minimialism. But it reads like a life manual written by a very young and privileged person. Full of hokey platitudes. A mush-mash self-help book with a tone that rubbed me the wrong way. #netgalley
