The Regeneration Trilogy
The Regeneration Trilogy | Pat Barker
4 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
The Regeneration Trilogy is Pat Barker's sweeping masterpiece of British historical fiction. 1917, Scotland. At Craiglockhart War Hospital in Scotland, army psychiatrist William Rivers treats shell-shocked soldiers before sending them back to the front. In his care are poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, and Billy Prior, who is only able to communicate by means of pencil and paper. . . Regeneration, The Eye in the Door and The Ghost Road follow the stories of these men until the last months of the war. Widely acclaimed and admired, Pat Barker's Regeneration trilogy paints with moving detail the far-reaching consequences of a conflict which decimated a generation. 'Harrowing, original, delicate and unforgettable' Independent 'A new vision of what the First World War did to human beings, male and female, soldiers and civilians. Constantly surprising and formally superb' A. S. Byatt, Daily Telegraph 'One of the few real masterpieces of late twentieth-century British fiction' Jonathan Coe Pat Barker was born in 1943. Her books include the highly acclaimed Regeneration trilogy, comprising Regeneration (1991); which was made into a film of the same name; The Eye in the Door (1993), which won the Guardian Fiction Prize; and The Ghost Road (1995), which won the Booker Prize, as well as the more recent novels Another World, Border Crossing, Double Vision, Life Class and Toby's Room. She lives in Durham.

@andrew65
This is now going to drive me bonkers as i thought i had a copy of the ghost road, where did that go.
Anyway i loved this trilogy about ww1 and it started with memorable exchanges between sassoon and owen in recovery in a Scottish hospital. A great evocation of war and its impact.
It so long ago since i picked these up that i think ill keep them out to reread + hopefully find that elusive third bk.

LeahBergen I own these and really need to read them soon. 🙄 4y
andrew61 @LeahBergen i would recommend them leah. 4y
CarolynM 😍 Regeneration is one of my favourite books. 4y
CarolynM I'm having a similar problem with this series thing. I seem to be lacking one or more book in most of them☹️ 4y

Just because every chance I get to recommend Pat Barker is worth it. Just amazing. #emojinov 🚪

Blaire Never heard of these - what is the genre/brief description? 6y
writerlibrarian @Blaire these are WW1 novels. Best WW1 novel I've read to-date. Also a very close to the line, never becoming voyeurism RPF. It's real people, living in what is for us remote history, a time in history which was difficult, a daily nightmare for the men and women on the front line and in the medical evac tents. Young men and women who went to war and came back broken. 6y

Not listed in any order and restricted myself to the authors I have read at least two books from so these are more your typical classical all time favourites than obscure or new authors but they all pass the more than two books rated 4⭐️ or more test 😀

Redheadrambles Oops forgot #10authorrecommendations Thanks @Marchpane 😀 and tagging my fellow Kiwi littens @Centique and @ClairesReads (edited) 7y

merelybookish Fun picks! Reminds me I need to read more Pat Barker. 7y
ClairesReads Um yes these are all great but confession I have never yet read Pat Barker! 7y
Redheadrambles @ClairesReads @merelybookish yeah I really enjoyed the entire trilogy but you do need to be prepared for some unrelenting WW1 imagery. I liked the physiological of healing after trauma. She writes very plainly which is a positive for this topic. 7y

The bathroom reno created lots of dust even if my contractor was really careful. So plaster dust equals dusty books and library shelves. I give you Librarian logic. 🤣#uncannyOctober #lookwhatyoumademedo

Of course, i have to check if every book is in my LT catalog as I clean them and reshuffle the shelves. My military history/fiction is done.

jfalkens Ugh now I'm looking forward to our bathroom reno even less especially since my Library is right next to our bathroom 😧 7y
writerlibrarian @jfalkens I would advice investing in cheap cotton sheets and cover the shelves. I wish I had think of it two weeks ago. 🤗 (edited) 7y
jfalkens @writerlibrarian I might have to do that thanks 😊😊 7y
writerlibrarian The first of three sections of shelving is done. Second one tomorrow. 7y
