Detective Joe "Preach" Everson, a prison chaplain turned police officer, is coming home. After a decade tracking down killers in Atlanta, and with a reputation as one of the finest homicide detectives in the city, his career derailed when he suffered a mental breakdown during the investigation of a serial killer who was targeting children. No sooner does Preach arrive at home in Creekville, North Carolina--a bohemian community near Chapel Hill--than a local bookstore owner is brutally killed, the first murder in a decade. The only officer with homicide experience, Preach is assigned to the case and makes a shocking discovery: the bookstore owner has been murdered in exactly the same manner as the pawnbroker in Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. With the help of Ariana Hale, a law student and bibliophile who knew the victim, Preach investigates the local writer's community. As their questions increase, a second body is found, this time eerily resembling the crime scene in a famous Edgar Allan Poe novella. Preach and Ariana realize that their adversary is an intelligent, literate killer with a mind as devious as it is disturbed. And one or both of them may be his next target.

I didn‘t expect to love this one- but I certainly did!! I think it will speak to all the bibliophiles (though the opening murder is of a bookshop owner!)! Vivid characters and a colorful setting make this fun to guess ahead of our damaged detective hero! #BookNerd

TheWhiteHatter Beautiful picture! 6y
TorieStorieS @TheWhiteHatter Thanks so much!! I thought my stack of books ornament was an appropriate accompaniment to this read! 😊 6y

I stayed up waaaaaaaay too late to finish this last night. I love that experience! Even though I felt the book as a whole was a little uneven, I didn't see the ending coming at all. Plus, literary murders!!! Comes out November 7.

Heads up: I thought this would be a cozy mystery, but it's actually a pretty graphic police procedural. Lots of dark stuff in this one!

Murders in a bookstore carried out in the style of murders in famous books??? HELL YES. I need this in my brain! ☠️🔪⚰️

ValerieAndBooks I look forward to what you think of this and whether bookish references in it would add to the TBR, too! 7y
Dogearedcopy I don't know about this book; but 'Irene' (by Pierre Lemaitre) is a very dark, eff-with-your mind detective story set in France; and about a serial killer who copies famous book murders... I think you would love it! 7y
