The Greek and Roman Myths: A Guide to the Classical Stories
The Greek and Roman Myths: A Guide to the Classical Stories | Philip Matyszak
6 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
Full of intriguing facts and diverting storiesthe ideal introduction to the myths and tales that lie at the heart of Western culture. Who was Pandora and what was in her famous box? How did Achilles get his Achilles heel? What exactly is a Titan? And why is one computer virus known as a Trojan horse? The myths of ancient Greece and Rome can seem bewilderingly complex, yet they are so much a part of modern life and discourse that most of us know fragments of them. This comprehensive companion takes these fragments and weaves them into an accessible and enjoyable narrative, guiding the reader through the basic stories of classical myth. Philip Matyszak explains the sequences of events and introduces the major plots and characters, from the origins of the world and the labors of Hercules to the Trojan War and the voyages of Odysseus and Aeneas. He brings to life an exotic cast of heroes and monsters, wronged women and frighteningly arbitrary yet powerful gods. He also shows how the stories have survived and greatly influenced later art and culture, from Renaissance painting and sculpture to modern opera, literature, movies, and everyday products.

This is a lovely book, an easy read and beautifully laid out. And I mean just look at the cover! #CoverLove This book takes you through Greek and Roman mythology, it gives you low down of who is related to who, and what each god rules over. It has some great illustrations that bring the book to life, along with some pictures of "modern" (in relation to these ancient gods) art associated with them. A great beginner to mythology! #Mythology #Dreamy

So, I couldn't wait. 💁🏼 I'm delving into The Greek and Roman Myths between finishing Assassins Apprentice and choosing my next novel to read. It's brilliant thus far and I highly recommend to any interested in or studying the classics. I know already I'm going to use this a lot over the next few years of uni life. #greekmyths #romanmyths #classicist #mythology #classicalstudies

I can't wait to get into this book as soon as I've gotten down my priority TBR this month. It's getting closer to the end of summer break for me and I am overly excited to start my 2nd year of uni. You have no idea. The closer it gets the more and more classics I'll been reading in prep so 🙌🙌🙌 #classicist #theclassics #mythology #greekmyths #romanmyths #epicreads #booklover #bibliophile

I-read-and-eat I love this series of mythology books. I have yet to buy this one but thorougly enjoyed the norse and Celtic one. They are quite good and well informed. Curious to know what you think about it! 7y
Sophoclessweetheart @I-read-and-eat I have read this since posting this and posted a review here I believe? 💁🏼 I've heard the Celtic one is rather poor in comparison but this one is brilliant and very informative and interesting without being basic like some of the other Greek and Roman myth books I've read. 7y
I-read-and-eat @MythicReads I did see your update now, so sorry I didn't notice it before🙈 I am pretty sure I'll get this one then! (Starting my Classics master next year, never hurts to be a bit more informed) I quite liked the celtic one tbh. But I am very familiair with both the material and the author so that might help. (I majored in Celtic studies.) The material is very limited for Celtic studies and you need to make some bold claims at times 1/1 7y
I-read-and-eat In onder too say anything at all. Having said that, the book could be more organised and the author has some views on the material that I do not share. Good, readable, books on celtic myths are hard to come by and this one is quite alright 😉 PS. I love your pictures! 7y
Sophoclessweetheart @I-read-and-eat I'm my second year of my BA in Classical Studies. It's a lovely subject to study but my focus is on Ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian history and mythology. I have a passing interest in medieval history and the dark ages, including the celts but it's never been something I wanted to Pursue further. And thank you so much! X 7y
