Dark Asylum
Dark Asylum | E. S. Thomson
15 posts | 8 read | 8 to read
The lips had been darned closed with six long, black, stitches. Clumsily executed, they gave the face a crude deaths-head appearance, like a child's drawing scrawled upon a wall . . . 1851, Angel Meadow Asylum. Dr Rutherford, principal physician to the insane, is found dead, his head bashed in, his ears cut off, his lips and eyes stitched closed. The police direct their attention towards Angel Meadow's inmates, but to Jem Flockhart and Will Quartermain the crime is an act of calculated retribution, rather than of madness. To discover the truth Jem and Will must pursue the story through the darkest corners of the city - from the depths of a notorious rookery, to the sordid rooms of London's brothels, the gallows, the graveyard, the convict fleet and then back to the asylum. In a world where guilt and innocence, crime and atonement, madness and reason, are bounded by hypocrisy, ambition and betrayal, Jem and Will soon find themselves caught up in a web of dark secrets and hidden identities.

Not as good as Beloved Poison but still an enjoyable read it was more chance rather than detection brought this book to its conclusion. Jem and Will's relationship also seemed to differ slightly than that in BP especially as Jem strayed off of the straight and narrow in this book. The story is overflowing with descriptive text, perhaps too much. The diary sections throughout are better than the main story itself. Borderline Pick.

Mehso-so

Overall it was okay. Parts of it were predictable and there were a couple scenes that felt gratuitous, rather than necessary for plot development. With that said, I‘d try another book in the series because it has potential.

My copy has just been delivered. I may delay reading it until I get to Fuerteventura in a couple of weeks time. A bit of poolside reading in the Sun hopefully.

More adventures in the smog and filth of London for Jem and Will, and more dead bodies. While the atmosphere of the book makes me desperately yearn for fresh air and sunshine, the characters are fascinating, and the mysteries satisfying. Looking forward to more in the series.

Some of my #MUSTREADS - these are must reads if you like these certain type of books: mystery, Alternative history, historical fiction mystery. Also, I think everyone should read Celeste Ng. I read her for the first time last year.

#ReadingResolutions

Laughterhp @MinDea I just put the Alienist on my TBR the other day! Agreed! Historical fiction and mysteries combined are one of my favorites!! (edited) 6y
MinDea Or this one I quite enjoyed this one too. It is more futuristic but mystery too. It is pretty good! 6y
MinDea Do you have any recommendations? Always looking for some good ones and sounds like we have similar tastes! 6y
Laughterhp @MinDea It does sound like we have similar tastes. I‘d recommend the following for historical mysteries: whispers beyond the veil - Jessica Estevao, Beloved Poison - ES Thomson, and the Veronica Speedwell series. 6y
Laughterhp @MinDea For a dystopian, I really liked 6y
MinDea I got The English Wife in my botm box 2 or 3 months ago. I will check out the other ones. Thank you! 6y

This is the second book of the Jem Flockhart series and it did not disappoint. Great characters, great plot, and great twist at the end. Can't wait for Ms. Thomson's next story in this series.

I love this series so much! And to think I randomly picked up the first one at my library. I am super excited that the author is currently already working on a 3rd book as well! The 2nd book didn‘t disappoint. It was a great mystery and had you guessing until the end. The killer was not who you expected it to be! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Just got my first delivery from Book Depository. I love that I can order books not yet released in the US. However, I don‘t like how they don‘t give you an actual tracking number and just a timeframe! Though the timeframe was very accurate!! Can‘t wait to dive into these! And look at those pretty bookmarks! #MiniBookHaul

So. Fricking. GOOD. gothy historical murder mystery. Not usually my thing. At all. But I couldn't get enough of it. More please!

bobregina That description sound so good! 7y
miserybookchick @bobregina the author has a phd in medieval medicine (i think, cant remember exactly what it was called 😅) and its set in a hospital so it's super interesting from that angle aswell knowing that a lot of things that happen are based on fact! 7y
