When Normal Blew Up
When Normal Blew Up: The Story of the People Who Died and the People Who Lived On | Joni Foster
6 posts | 2 read | 13 to read
In 1967, in the small town of Circleville, Ohio, a man walked into an old-fashioned drug store on a busy Saturday and shouted for everyone to leave, he had a bomb. Five people died that day. Joni Foster, who lost her father, weaves a story about the lives of the five families, and a history lesson on the struggles of women fifty years ago.

Thanks for the recommendation @Reviewsbylola ; straightforward and quick read. I was 15 in 1967. My childhood was full of trips to the soda counters for cherry cokes or ice cream treats---nostalgia...

Reviewsbylola So glad you liked it! I also thought the beginning was very reminiscent of Hillbilly Elegy, how it talks about the Hillbilly Highway and the Kentucky transplants in Ohio, so that was cool too! 7y
Eggs @Reviewsbylola I haven't read "Elegy" yet but want to 7y

The fascinating story of an estranged husband blowing up the drugstore where his wife worked in Circleville, Ohio in 1967. Not only did it recount the history of the event (the author's father died in the attack), but it was a great history of the time period (seriously made me want to go sit at the counter of a soda fountain. What a time to live!). Easily read in one sitting.

JanuarieTimewalker13 There was a drug store in the neighborhood where I grew up called Parini's. It had a soda fountain and I always got the best strawberry iced cream there, then I think I moved on to coffee...pretty sure he closed when I was about 5, but I still remember that place. He was probably about 70 then and I think the place went back to the 20s. Everyone was sad when he closed. I'll never forget Mr. Parini. 7y
