The Guns of Empire | Django Wexler
5 posts | 5 read | 1 reading | 1 to read
As the “audacious and subversive”* Shadow Campaigns novels continue, the weather is growing warmer, but the frosty threat of Vordan’s enemies is only growing worse... As the roar of the guns subsides and the smoke of battle clears, the country of Vordan is offered a fragile peace… After their shattering defeats at the hands of brilliant General Janus bet Vhalnich, the opposing powers have called all sides to the negotiating table in hopes of securing an end to the war. Queen Raesinia of Vordan is anxious to see the return of peace, but Janus insists that any peace with the implacable Sworn Church of Elysium is doomed to fail. For their Priests of the Black, there can be no truce with heretics and demons they seek to destroy, and the war is to the death. Soldiers Marcus d’Ivoire and Winter Ihernglass find themselves caught between their general and their queen. Now, each must decide which leader truly commands their loyalty—and what price they might pay for final victory. And in the depths of Elysium, a malign force is rising—and defeating it might mean making sacrifices beyond anything they have ever imagined. From the Hardcover edition.

So far this is the best installment since the first one although not quite as good as the first. Winter remains my sweet cinnamon roll that I don't want anything bad to happen to so of course she keeps getting done bad. There is a bit of heavy handed foreshadowing for a twist but it's the kind of thing I really dig so I'm really excited for the payoff when it comes. I'm excited to start the conclusion next!

#BookReport
I've been doing quite a bit of #audiogaming lately so I've managed to finish two audiobooks this week. I'm liking the Shadow Campaigns series so it's been a good fit for me.

#WeeklyForecast
My goal this week is to finally finish my traditional book along with the rest of the Shadow Campaigns on audio.

Next up, some more flintlock fantasy.

sakeriver It‘s been like three years since I read the previous book in this series. I can‘t remember basically anything that happened in any of them. Alas. 6y

Finally got around to reading this. Let's just say this series doesn't disappoint. Plot thickens perfectly. Battle tactics are still as fun to read as they were in the first book. And the character development has yet to disappoint.
Also that ending gave me chills. I desperately need that last book 😭
