Gilded Suffragists
Gilded Suffragists: The New York Socialites who Fought for Women's Right to Vote | Johanna Neuman
5 posts | 2 read | 18 to read
New York Citys elite women who turned a feminist cause into a fashionable revolution In the early twentieth century over two hundred of New York's most glamorous socialites joined the suffrage movement. Their namesAstor, Belmont, Rockefeller, Tiffany, Vanderbilt, Whitney and the likecarried enormous public value. These women were the media darlings of their day because of the extravagance of their costume balls and the opulence of the French couture clothes, and they leveraged their social celebrity for political power, turning women's right to vote into a fashionable cause. Although they were dismissed by critics as bored socialites trying on suffrage as they might the latest couture designs from Paris, these gilded suffragists were at the epicenter of the great reforms known collectively as the Progressive Era. From championing education for women, to pursuing careers, and advocating for the end of marriage, these women were engaged with the swirl of change that swept through the streets of New York City. Johanna Neuman restores these women to their rightful place in the story of womens suffrage. Understanding the need for popular approval for any social change, these socialites used their wealth, power, social connections and style to excite mainstream interest and to diffuse resistance to the cause. In the end, as Neuman says, when change was in the air, these women helped push womens suffrage over the finish line.

I wish this book had been more compelling, since I think today‘s women owe a debt to the suffragists of the Gilded Age. There were multiple suffrage organizations and a lot of catty infighting. Honestly, women got the vote in spite of their behavior rather than because of it! Plus, it read like a doctoral dissertation, and could have been organized differently for more clarity. It was just a snoozer for me.

This is comparing English suffrage events (which tended to be more violent) to American (the high society events anyway).

Quotes like this are making me feel the irony of starting this book after the second Women‘s March. How far have we really come in the last 100 years? Sigh.

This is an ARC so the text may vary from the published book.

melbeautyandbooks Not far enough! 😢 6y

I have a #NetGalley shelf that‘s big enough to be stressful, especially because I‘m behind on the pub dates of most of the books. This one came out in September, and I just started it yesterday. Maybe I should take a month and JUST read my #ARCs. Anyway, it‘s interesting so far!

Lissa00 Me too! Although I made a resolution to keep up with the ones this year and so far I‘ve been able to do that. The backlog from last year bothers me though😏 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Lissa00 I know what you mean. I‘ve been trying not to request much and to read two each month. Hopefully I‘ll get myself all fixed up soon. It‘s just the perfectionist in me that wants to finish them in publication order. 6y
LauraBeth I just read one of my netgalleys yesterday - it makes me feel so accomplished in some way 😂 Although I still need to review it 6y

Cinfhen That was my NY resolution to be more mindful of those ARCs 😝 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @LauraBeth IKR. I like doing the reviews, though. And I‘m glad to know I‘m not alone. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen It‘s a good goal! 6y
minkyb I like the sound of this one! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @minkyb It‘s interesting but a bit dry so far. Thankfully just about 250 pages, and still worth continuing. Hope to be finished soooon! 6y

#SeptemBowie Day 11 - #SuffragetteCity

This book just came out and is on my NetGalley shelf. Photo from the author's web site. It's a reminder that women (both glamorous and not) made the difference in voting rights. #resist #readersresist
