I'm Dying Up Here: Heartbreak and High Times in Standup Comedy's Golden Era | William Knoedelseder
5 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
Full of revealing portraits of many of the best-known comedic talents of the 1970s, "I'm Dying Up Here" is also a poignant tale of the price of success and the terrible cost of failure--professional and moral.

Mehso-so

I was loving this book until the author started to explore the topic of the comedians strike at the Comedy Store. From there, he dedicated about eighty percent of the book towards that topic, which is unfortunate because it's not particularly interesting.

Also, if you've lost a loved one to suicide, it might be best to avoid this particular book.

(Continued)...bits while yukking it up on Johnny's couch? Accident or not, that material would be gone forever: You could never use it again or audiences would think you stole it from him. That's why Kirchenbauer, Gallagher, and a few others decided they would no longer perform in front of Williams. If he was in the room, they wouldn't go on.

Pickpick

If you love #comedy history you will love this book. With the recent passing of #MitziShore & the success of the Showtime series based on this book (not a retelling) it seems right to mention it in my feed. I will likely post more comedy inspiration later but this is a keeper. A great read with a lot of personal meaning for me & those who love the #comedystore and #LA #standup comedy. RIP Mitzi. :(
