Christopher Smart
Christopher Smart: Clown of God | Chris Mounsey
4 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
"This new biography of Christopher Smart offers a picture of a multifaceted eighteenth-century wit whose writing has far-reaching social, political, and historical significance. Poet, journalist, theater performer, cross-dresser, and theologian, who was questionably incarcerated for insanity, wherever Smart found himself his approach to life was at once serious and joyful, confirming him as one of God's clowns." "Building on previous biographical, bibliographical, and critical work - as well as on a broad scholarship on the publishing trade, on Grub Street and the position of the professional writer, and on the institutional treatment of madness in eighteenth-century England - Chris Mounsey constructs a version of Smart's life that is radically original. In its intelligent use of legal, parliamentary, and other archives, Mounsey both reappraises the familiar source material and mounts a challenge to earlier accounts of Smart's life and career. New interpretations of Smart's relationship with others (including his father-in-law John Newbery), his life on Grub Street as a political satirist, and his involvement in theological speculations provide a fuller and more engaging picture of the social, political, scientific, and religious context of his life and work."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. BarbaraBB He looks like a rock star! I would have remembered his every word too 😉. Thanks for enlightening us 🐰 (edited) 2y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen 🤣🤣🤣 lots of classes - he's the reason I ❤ the 18th century so much! And I'm afraid he's a no-go - homosexual 🤣 Told us to write what we know about, and he's proof - lots of articles/books on queer and disability studies, as he's partially sighted. @BarbaraBB 2y

Ok, couldn't resist creating this post for #back2school #bunnyread @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB !

These are all the "lion's" books! He's very interested in blindness/disability, Blake, 18th century, religion and lgbtq stuff.

Chris originally wanted to be a priest but due to his sexuality this wasn't an option. And his speciality is Christopher Smart - he advised all of his students to do their thesis on someone/something personal to them.

⬇️

jenniferw88 I did mine on William Blake (William is in my surname lol), but I mainly chose that topic so that I could get him as a supervisor, as I knew I wanted him out of all the lecturers I'd had 😂 And he was kind enough to give me a pdf of his Blake book, as it's very difficult to get hold of! 4y

Cinfhen You‘re full of surprises xxxxx 4y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen lol, well he is just so inspiring! I wouldn't have done my MA in 18th century literature if it hadn't been for him, and so I wouldn't have been able to help the #PemberLittens @sprainedbrain now. I could have stayed at the same uni & done an MA in disability studies (which had him a lot as a lecturer), but surprisingly it didn't appeal as much as the one at Southampton did, so went there instead! xxx 4y
BarbaraBB You ARE full of surprises, tell us more 💖 4y

This author has plenty of #tattoos! I know him from my time at university where he taught me several modules & inspired my love of 18th century literature. He also told the class to go out & get a #tattoo for our homework! 🤣 Needless to say, I didn't! #augustgrrrl @Cinfhen

Cinfhen Sounds like an awesome professor 🙌🏻 7y
Andrea4 I wish I'd been assigned that kind of homework! 7y

🎶 I try out a smile, I aim it at you / You must have missed it, you always do 🎶

Chris Mounsey was one of my lecturers at University and is a huge inspiration to me as he is partially blind, hence the above quote reminds me frequently of him.

Also, I can't believe this book is in the Litsy database!
