The Jewel that was Ours: An Inspector Morse Mystery 9
The Jewel that was Ours: An Inspector Morse Mystery 9 | Colin Dexter
4 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
FROM CWA CARTIER DIAMOND DAGGER AWARD WINNER COLIN DEXTER He looked overweight around the midriff, though nowhere else, and she wondered whether perhaps he drank too much. He looked weary, as if he had been up most of the night conducting his investigations ... For Oxford, the arrival of twenty-seven American tourists is nothing out of the ordinary ... until one of their number is found dead in Room 310 at the Randolph Hotel. It looks like a sudden - and tragic - accident. Only Chief Inspector Morse appears not to overlook the simultaneous theft of a jewel-encrusted antique from the victim's handbag ... Then, two days later, a naked and battered corpse is dragged from the River Cherwell. A coincidence? Maybe. But this time Morse is determined to prove the link ... PRAISE FOR THE INSPECTOR MORSE SERIES "The Inspector Morse series, both the novels and the television dramas, are among the finest creations of British culture and are known and loved all over the world." Sydney Morning Herald "Let those who lament the decline of the English detective story reach for Colin Dexter" Guardian

Pickpick

To be fair, I‘m always going to rate a Morse book as a pick because, well, it‘s Morse. This one has interest, though, as it was the first of the series to have been developed from a screenplay (The Wolvercote Tongue , from series 2 of Inspector Morse), so the main characters are showing an interesting mix of the original book characters and the TV characters. And it‘s the first book where Morse is now driving his infamous Jag.

Book 11/12 #BFCr2

I won‘t deny it, today hasn‘t been easy. We slept only as a result of exhaustion last night. Visited Westonbirt Arboretum for some quiet reflection amongst the trees, then when my bf went home, I needed something to stop my mind wandering, so did some #AudioCrafting with the tagged book. Now I need to sleep, but am still thinking so much of our own jewel, taken so suddenly from us.

15k steps towards this week‘s #BFCr2, though 😕

1) The Jewel That Was Ours - Colin Dexter (a Morse novel), Living Dangerously - Katie Fforde, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Won‘t Stop Talking - Susan Cain

2) Ghost Wall by Sarah Moss

3) currently 2. I‘ve literally just returned one Libby borrow, and have a physical book reserved awaiting collection at my local library.

In most cases where #jewels are in stories they are either part of a treasure hunt, or they have been stolen. In this case the Wolvercote Tongue, a priceless jewel, has gone missing from a hotel room in Oxford. Time to call on the inimitable Inspector Morse to solve the case. There was a good tv version of the story (still sticks in my mind over 20+ years later) starring John Thaw in the TV series of Morse.

CrowCAH I ❤️ the Morse TV series; great book choice!!! 7y
Andrew65 @CrowCAH A favourite of mine too, I'm sure Morse is responsible for my love of crime books. 7y
